Chapped Thumbs

I have a 6 month old who sucks her thumbs, already I see them starting to chap with the cold dry weather. Any suggestions on what I can put on them to help prevent them from getting worse? I wasn't sure what was good since she eventually puts them in her mouth. She doesn't suck on them much while she is awake, she mainly uses them to go to sleep. I think I would be able to put something on them and keep her from sucking her thumbs while it absorbs and dries. Thanks mommas!

What can I do next?

I agree- use some Aquaphor! My daughter had the same issue and I called the pediatrician and they recommended Aquaphor.. he said it would be ok since she will swallow some of it from sucking the thumb.

If your going to try and put a cream on her skin make sure it is all natural since she is going to be putting her thumb back in her mouth while she is taking several naps during the day. You don't want her injesting anything that isn't meant for internal use.
I've never had to deal with chapped thumbs or finger and two of my kids are finger suckers. Maybe I would try olive oil or Burt's Bees hand lotions that are "natural", or maybe even an all natural chap stick. Nothing with alchohol in it as that will just dry her thumbs out more.
God Bless....I've been there with a 3,2 and 6 mo old, so I know how tough things can be, hang in there....things are already much easier and they are only 4,3 and 2 now!

Lansinoh. It is actually used for breastfeeding mothers. You apply it to your nipples and it is food grade so it does not need to be removed before breastfeeding. I had bought a few tubes when my daughter was born but never really needed them on my breasts, so I kept them and found other uses. It works great to heal dry cracked skin anywhere not just on nipples, and I use it on my kids faces in the winter as well as their hands and feet and my elbows. It really does a good job and I don't have to worry about it getting in their mouth because it is safe. I would put the lansinoh on her thumb a few times a day and then after her bath but not right before bed as she may not like sucking on it then, but even if you did it before bed it would be fine for her to suck on it. I bought mine at walmart but suspect you can probably find it anywhere. Good luck.

I'd try Aquaphor. I think it's extremely gentle, but kind of thick, so it would stay on long enough to absorb into the skin.

Hey. My son did that last year and it got so bad a cut got infected. we had hydrocorison that we put on it and then put mittens (on both hands) to keep them out of his mouth for atleast 20 minutes. i would use heavy lotions and the cortisone cream alternating and try mittens...even if she doesn't like them all the time, if you could get them on for 20 minutes or a half hour to let the lotion/cream soak in a few times a day it will clear it up pretty fast.
