Changing a Squirmy 1 Yr Old!

Help! My daughter has decided that she will cry, or sit up when it's time to change her diaper. It was funny at first, but now is driving me nuts, as I have to change her diaper so often. She will not lay still like she used to, and it's like I'm wrestling her to get the diaper back on.

She is crawling and pulling up, but not walking yet, so changing her while standing is not an option for now.

My son who is 11 mos sometimes does this too. He lays very still for me when I either throw a blankie over his head and play peekaboo while putting the diaper on, or I will give him my keys to play with. Don't know why, but babies LOVE keys!!!

Hope it helps.

First thing you need to do is let her know that it is not a game anymore. Be firm and consistant with her. Something that I do with my little one (21 mo) is give him something to hold or play with while I am working on the other end!! We have one toy (play cell phone) that he only gets when at the changing table. Then he has something to look forward to when having his diaper changed. It works well because it is a "new" toy each time. Lots of sounds and lights!! He loves that!! I hope this helps!!

L.,

My granddaughter did this same thing to her momma; what she ended up doing was trying to distract her with things in the room or giving her toys to play with while she changed her. and she also sang a song to her that she liked or did pattycake with her....

This may sound silly but it worked. We gave my daughter a 'big girl' pillow. We would put it under her head and let her lay on it while we changed her. It actually got to the point where she would go get the pillow and want to be changed.

I'm afraid I don't have any advice for you. I just wanted to say...AMEN!!!! My 11 month old crawled away while trying to get dressed after his bath tonight....NAKED!!!!!!!!!!! My husband and I had to tag team him! I love how active he is but I long for the days when a diaper change or getting dressed didn't take 15 minutes and involve me breaking into a sweat! Let me know if you get any good advice!

my little guy is only 9 months old, but changing his diaper is like roping a calf!!! i reserve one of his favorite toys for diaper changing time and only let him have it then. it keeps him entertained for the time i need to get him changed. if i am away from home, i sing a song he likes and make silly faces at him so he keeps still. good luck!

Hi L..

My 13 month old son used to give me the same battle until I learned that a small toy would keep him occupied long enough for me to finish his change. The trick is storing small toys near the changing table that he has not seen in a while. (Old baby rattles, small books and believe it or not, kitchen utensils have him mesmerized for hrs (safe ones, of course.) Just switch out the toys every few days to keep the mystery alive. I hope this also helps you.
