Can You Help Me Identify This Rash on My Son's Face?

My 17-month-old son has had a rash on his cheeks for the past month. No rash anywhere else on his body. Doesn't seem to itch or bother him. Pediatrician wasn't very helpful and told us to take a "wait and see" approach.
Pictures here:

My husband thinks it's a food allergy (possibly something he eats at daycare?), but then why is it only restricted to his cheeks? Could it be acne? Any ideas? I have no clue and am worried that something may he harming him and I'm not doing anything about it.

Edited to add: Thanks for the suggestions to see a dermatologist. The pediatrician didn't mention it, and it never crossed my mind. We kept thinking it's an allergy, so asked for a referral to an allergist. Will make an appointment with a dermatologist and see what he says. Sorry about posting the picture links - it's not a virus, just my son's face. I thought it might be helpful to see the rash in question.

So What Happened?

I took my son to a dermatologist, who ruled out the possibility of an allergy. Said that the rash was most likely due to clogged pores, and suggested to use Cetaphil Baby Wash to wash his face.

We're not doctors, and I don't usually click on any links I find on line or on a forum like this.

But I'd suggest you consider seeing a pediatric dermatologist. A second opinion is always a good idea if you aren't satisfied with a doctor's answer.

The last thing you need are dozens of opinions from a bunch of strangers!

Yeah, no one here clicks links from strangers. Why are you second guessing your doctor? Google fifth disease. It's also known as slapped cheeks disease. Highly contagious and dangerous for pregnant women.

yes!
because of my extensive training, i can do that.
it's a food allergy (which can absolutely show up in specific parts of the body.)
it's acne.
it's contact dermatitis.
it's spider bites.
it's skin cancer.
it's a voodoo curse.
or it's something else.
or you could listen to your pediatrician.
or you could go see a dermatologist.

I don't think this looks like a food allergy reaction.
It looks a bit like a mild case of impetigo to me - it's really common.
For a mild case, just keep it clean.
If it gets worse then the doctor might prescribe an antibiotic.

With a lot of childhood issues - wait and see (and monitor for additional symptoms) works pretty well.
Just keep your doctor in the loop with anything that changes.

i would say baby acne and that it will go away over time.
i would also take the drs wait and see approach.
if you think its a food allergy you can food journal everything he eats, and when. then take notes on the rash when its worse, better, and over a period of time you will be able to see a pattern if its food related.

We aren't doctors. The only one who should be diagnosing your son is a doctor. It takes a while to get an appointment with a ped dermatologist, so call immediately.

He's had a rash for a month and you've not taken him to the Dr??

If you're not happy with what your Dr. said... GO to a dermatologist and get some answers. Geeze...

We will not click on any link because we don't know you and if your link has malware or virus,

We are not Dr.s. You should be seeing a Dr with your child instead of asking medical questions on a public forum,

I wouldn't be concerned once his doctor said wait and see. Lots of babies get rashes on their faces. My 4 grandchildren had rashes on their cheeks as babies. They go away with time. I've never heard of a rash, only on the face, being serious.

I also do not open pages posted in questions.

My kids always seemed to have some kind of rash. They had lots of rashes the doctor called "non-specific viral rash". They got rashes on their faces when they were teething. They got rashes when they got dry skin.

I didn't open the link, but could it be rosacea? Both my husband and son have it. It is a harmless skin condition which presents as redness, typically on the face, with a bumpiness. A dermatologist could tell you.

It does look like baby acne but I never saw a child this old with it. I'm not a doctor though.

I would definitely take him to a pediatric dermatologist. Good luck!

It might be KP. Does he have it on the back of his arms? Anyway, go to the dermatologist and have him checked out.

I think it looks like contact dermatitis, but the cause is a mystery. Could be a cleaner/detergent, a food, dirt/mold/pollen... I hope the dermatologist can help.
