Can My 6.5 Month Old Be Afraid of the Dark?

My 6 1/2 month old son has been sleeping in a dark room for the past 2 months. He originally had nite lites but when I would breastfeed him at night he would stare at them instead of eating so I unplugged them. Over the past week he has started rolling over to him stomach at night and crying because he is stuck. Here is the funny thing - he only cries out when it is dark - if he rolls over on his stomach in the morning when the sun is out (he has curtains in his room but some light still shines through) he goes back to sleep. Could he be afraid of the dark and when he rolls over at night he is terrified?

What can I do next?

Your little guy might simply have a pleasant and relaxing association with nightlights, since he was used to staring at one while you were snuggling him and offering to nurse – probably doing at least some nursing. So staring at a light might still be relaxing for him, maybe slightly hypnotic.

While there's general agreement that more sleep-inducing melatonin is produced in total darkness, providing a nightlight might still result in better sleep overall. It might be worth a little experimentation.

Also, everything seems bigger in the dark (I'm sure you've noticed this yourself). Discomforts, anxieties, impatience, hunger or thirst, loneliness. When we're able to see a thousand details around us, they distract us from our own sensations and thoughts. So it makes sense that your son is distracted enough when he can see the room that more negative feelings don't overwhelm him. So it may not be actual of the dark that fear he's feeling.

I'm not really sure if he could be afraid of the dark, but I have always had a dim night light in my daughters room; she is now 2 1/2. I initially put it in her room so I could see in the middle of the night when I would go in to nurse her and I just let it stay. She never seemed to be bothered by it and I plan to keep it until she doesn't want it anymore. Maybe try to put it back in but block it with a toy or something so he can't see it when you nurse him and see if he sleeps better. I don't really see anything wrong with having a night light as long as it doesn't interfere with anything.

No your little man is not afraid of the dark, what it is, is that when he opens his eyes and can't see anything familiar or should i say nothing @ all (lol) he starts to cry until you come to rescue him. so now that you have already started out with a night light, you are gonna have to keep it on until he out grows it. I did the night light thing with my oldest, but i didn't with my 2nd one and he slept in the dark @ the age of 4 months when i 1st put him in his room. he could not sleep with a night light on, when i put one in the room so that i can walk in and check on him in the middle of the night he would cry or wake up until u cut the light off.

I don't think he's afraid of the dark but perhaps was used to falling asleep with the night light on.Can you just flip them back on before you leave? I know people who have to have lights and television on to fall asleep and I think that's ridiculous, but a night light is a good idea for all just in case he was sick or something in the middle of the night you can race in without tripping.
