She's probably discovered that it feels good to feel down there. It's a common thing around this age with boys. Putting a onsie with something like overalls on it a good way of taking care of the issue. If she's not crying when she goes I don't think that it would be a UTI since it's usually very painful.

I had UTIs as young as age 2. It definitely does happen but you should check with your pediatrician for symptoms - what you're describing doesn't sound like a UTI to me but I'm not a medical professional. UTIs hurt like hell when you pee so I would think you would notice that she's crying or at least uncomfortable during peeing. UTIs don't make the vaginal area itchy - that could be a yeast infection, but I would think that you'd see the redness and irritation and discharge if that were the case. UTIs will cause a fever if not treated and will spread to the kidneys, causing abdominal pain - common symptoms among toddlers are obvious pain when peeing, an unexplained fever, blood in the urine, and abdominal pain.

Are you sure she's scratching and not just exploring? Exploring that area is totally normal and natural. If she's really scratching and there is no redness, swelling or discharge then call the pedi about uti symptoms. And obviously call if there are signs of a yeast infection - you can treat that with OTC creams but you'd want that diagnosed by a doctor to track it and figure out the root cause.

A UTI would be my last guess as the cause for this happening. I suggest that she's just exploring herself. She's discovered another part of her anatomy. She may find touching herself pleasant or she may just be interested in what is down there.

My 2 yo granddaughter loves to take her diapers off and when it's time to put them back on will lay down, as she's asked, and then touch her vulva, the area visible on the outside, and the creases between her legs. She does the same at most diaper changes. So normal.

No need to worry about her getting a UTI. Touching/exploring rarely, if ever, causes one. Putting on the diaper too tight will not cause a UTI. Neither will not changing her often enough. Or taking a long hot bath. UTI's, tho they do happen, are not common at this age.

She doesn't have one now. If she did she'd cry when urinating.

It could be lots of things, but why not start simple? My daughter has done this most of her life, and we have tested for lots of things, but really, it came down to skin irritation. We finally solved it by following the doctor's suggestion of baking soda baths. Put just enough water into the tub to cover her bottom, I kept an infant tub around just for this actually. Put in a lot of baking soda, like up to a cup for an infant tub, and let her soak for 10 minutes. No more and as close to it as you can. Then pat dry and let her air out. You can even use the blow dryer on her to dry all the nooks and crannies. We started doing this and it has made a HUGE difference.

You said she has eczema, have you figured out the cause of it? for my little one, it always showed up on her butt, and it is from milk/dairy and peanuts. I hope she gets better soon. Good luck!

I tend to think she's probably just exploring herself, but sure could get a UTI. People get UTI's for a variety of reasons (not just poor hygiene), and some people are more susceptible to them. And really, it is possible to get them at any age.

It can't hurt to call your doctor and ask, but I wouldn't be surprised if she's just exploring.

If she accidently has BM on her hand or fingers and touches areas of her V. You might want to take her to a pediatrician to see why she is scratching so much

My daughter was very sick when she had a UTI.
Does your daughter look irritated down there? Could it be a yeast infection?

Yeast infection, pin worms, UTI, she already has eczema, allergy, food sensitivities, irritation from soaps and/or bubble bath - there are plenty of reasons she could be itchy.
Your pediatrician can help you figure out what it is and how to treat it.
Try adding 1 cup of plain yogurt into her bath water.
