2 Year Old with Itchy Bum

My daughter has been saying her yoni (pee pee) and her butt hurt/itch infrequently today. I noticed she was itching down her diaper beginning yesterday. Her whole bottom area looks totally fine and normal-- not red, no bumps. I'll take her in to see her doc if need be, but thought I'd ask if this rang a bell for anybody first. She's not all too bothered by it, but has mentioned it a few times. Could it be worms! Eek!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for the advice, everyone! She hasn't mentioned it since that day. A good bath, a few warm washcloths instead of wipes, and some healing salve seemed to do the trick.

It may also be a yeast infection. It's not that uncommon for toddlers. It's worth taking her to her MD.

I don't know about worms, but I'd get her checked out for a urinary tract infection. My friend's two-year-old daughter recently had one and she made the same complaint. They waited a few days, at which point she had a very high fever. Better to be safe, I think, and get her checked out. Good luck!

I just took my 2 year old in for this same problem. Dr. said it wasn't any type of infection. Could have been the soap I used in her bath, or just iritation from urine. Said the way to check for pinworms (if problem persisted) is to take a piece of tape and put it against her anal opening around 2am since that's when the pinworms seem to come out. Doesn't sound too pleasant, but thought I'd pass along.

I don't know whether or not anyone else has suggested this yet but it could be a yeast infection. It's not that rare in females even infants. Only your pediatrician can tell you for sure.

Pin worms would explain the bum. Not sure about the "pee pee." Pin worms aren't hard for the ped to treat. Disclaimer: this is pretty gross, but, at nighttime especially and/or first thing in the morning (or whenever she is itching), spread her butt cheeks and look for small white worms -- kind of look like tiny pieces of lint -- around her anus. That's what pin worms look like. Good luck.

LOL no, its NOT worms. Worms do not itch, and in fact, she would notice nothing different - YOU would see worms in her poop if that were the case.
She may have some general irritation, or could possibly have a yeast infection. Try putting some desitin or desitin-like diaper rash ointment on her butt and see if it helps the itching - and if she wears diapers, change her more frequently than usual to keep any urine off of her skin. If its just a minor irritation, the over the counter diaper rash ointment should do the trick - it helps heal and soothe a variety of butt related skin irritations.
If she is still complaining of itching after a day, she probably has a little yeast infection (very common). Take her to the ped, and they can give you some topical yeast infection medicine that will fix her right up.
Also, does she touch herself or put her hands into her diapers/underwear often? Dirty fingers on little parts can create irritation and make her itch too, so make sure she keeps her hands out of there.

Sounds like she might have a yeast infection. (yes, even little kids get them, my son had one when he was only a few months old.) I'd take her to the doctor to get checked out. If it is an infection, they can give her a cream to get rid of it.

I remember when my kids had the same symptoms, sorry but it was worms.
Easy way to tell is wait until they are asleep, get a flashlight & in the dark check their bum. The worms are usually visible then.
The good thing is a quick trip to the doc, some meds and things are better in no time! I think there might actually be over the counter meds too, ask your pharmacist.
Good Luck!

Dear J.,

it was recommended to us to give her sitz-baths, when we had a similar issue with our young daughter. Just add about 4T of baking soda to a bath and have her sit in it for at least 10 min. You could do this every time she bathes, to help keep extra clean. Good luck!

Fabric softeners can cause that.

Could it be a yeast infection? Or maybe something similar? I know lots of people think you have to be sexually active to get a yeast infection but that's not true. Many years ago my son actually got one....I told the doctor I thought he was crazy boys don't get them.( I was told it could have been the antibiotics he was taking)....so weird.

It's possible that it could be pinworms. Not a big deal - people have them all the time & often don't even know it. My kids have all had them and the only reason I knew was b/c I do cloth diapers and actually saw the worms in poops from several days previous (you can't see them in a fresh poop).

That being said, if she's reporting that her vulva is itchy (or perhaps it's her vagina - do you know which, it sounds like she doesn't differentiate between them yet) then that wouldn't be indicative of worms since they are in the digestive tract. The other thought that pops into my mind is candida. You could try using diluted tea tree oil to wipe her with to see if that helps - it kills 70 different kinds of bacteria including candida & other yeasts. Taking acidophilus can also help prevent yeast if that's what this is. Often yeast is obvious due to an odour and/or discharge but not always.

What are you using in the bath? Have you switched to a new soap or shampoo that could be causing her irritation? Do you wash her vulva & bottom with soap? Have you changed laundry detergents? My kids are sensitive and we don't use fabric softener, use a non-traditional soap in our laundry and put vinegar in the rinse cycle - clothes washed in regular detergent will cause my kids to itch all over but their genital region seems to be the most itchy b/c it's a more sensitive area.

Just some thoughts for you. Good luck figuring it out.
