Can I Wear a Black Dress to My Brothers Wedding?? **Edited**-again....

I know that it used to be taboo to wear black to a wedding, but my brother is getting married on Saturday and I have nothing to wear. I went shopping today, and only found black dresses!!! (or white ones) UGGHH!!! Obviously I know that I can't wear a white dress to the wedding, so what about black? Is it still taboo? I wouldn't want anyone to think that I am against the wedding or anything like that, is that what it means if you wear black??

The wedding is at 3:00 in the afternoon on Saturday, I am not in the wedding, but will be in family pictures. The wedding color is Tiffany Blue. My 2 year old is going to be a flower girl......my daughter is wearing a white dress, it is beautiful!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

OK - so I went back to the store last night - and found an entirely different black dress that I just LOVE - I went ahead and bought it, but I am still going to continue looking for a dress in another color. I have some gorgeous silver shoes that I can wear with the dress, and if I can't find another dress, I will look for a shawl or something to go along with it! Thanks for all of your help ~

The only thing I've heard regarding black is that if the mother of the groom or the bride wears black it is supposed to signify that she doesn't approve of the person her son/daughter is marrying. I've never heard of it carried over to siblings Wear black! It'll be fine!

What time of the day is the wedding? If it's a late afternoon into evening, or an evening wedding, black is fine - as long as it's not a slinky black dress. If it's a morning or lunchtime wedding, go for something else. Are you in the wedding or just a guest? If you have a nice pantsuit, that'll work fine as well, or skirt and blouse. I don't think there's a dress code (other than nice :) for attendees. Enjoy the event!

Absolutely you can wear black.... dress it up with some colored jewelry, shoes or a shawl, maybe a color that would coordinate with your brothers wedding. I think black can be a very elegant color! Heck I wore black when I got married!!

Black is absolutely fine. Since your daughter is the flower girl is she wearing a white dress or tiffany blue like the bridesmaids? I would see if you can find a shawl, jacket, or even a scarf or a belt in the same shade of blue. It will look nice in family pictures for you to be coordinating.

I would say about 20 people wore black to my wedding -- and it started at 3pm. Generally, ettiquette says it is appropriate to wear navy or black to evening weddings but I think a lot of people were in your boat. I didn't even really think about it until I saw your post :) They all looked very nice. We had a very formal wedding but again the ceremony was at 3pm and reception starting at 530. I think it is fine!

I wouldnt worry about it too much, its alot more modern these days to wear black because it doesnt carry the meaning that it used to.

As far as I know--the only color you shouldn't wear is white/off white. Shoot, the last wedding I went to the bride's dress was white & black and the bride's maids were all in black dresses. Go for it!

Is it a formal evening wedding? If not, I wouldn't wear black. BUT if you still can't find anything more colorful by Saturday (you do still have nearly a week...) I'd try to dress up the black with light/colorful accessories....

I had an evening wedding on Valentine's Day and my MOM wore black....and *I* was the one who picked out her outfit!!

I think as long as it's an appropriate dress for the occassion, it's fine. Summer afternoon wedding? maybe not. Winter evening wedding? I don't see a problem.

If you're *that* worried about it though, keep looking!

I think black is fine, especially if you add some color to it, maybe you can find a shawl that has tiffany blue in it, or shoes and purse. If you still are uncertain, ask the bride her opinion and if she would be offended...

I think that if you get a colorful scarf or shawl to wear or even some pretty bright colored jewelry then it would be totally fine. Even just a bright colored purse and shores might be enough or a pop of color.

Have fun.

I know what you mean, there arent a lot of options out there. I have worn black to wedding several times. Since its your brother, you could ask him if it would offend him. I dont think its a big deal.

I'm not even going to view other answers before giving my opinion. I don't know what fashion says about wearing black to a wedding, but I think what you need to do is to talk with your brother and his bride and get their opinions. If they are OK with it, then I don't see a problem. Who cares if some 'fashionista' in the crowd has a negative opinion? That's just one person's opinion, and it shouldn't matter.

We don't have to follow all those rules here in California! Wear what you like! The last wedding I went to, I saw a few ladies wearing black dresses. Nothing wrong with that!

Black sounds like it would look very crisp, sharp, and nice against those Tiffany blue dresses in pictures :) And black and white always go together!!

First of all, is it all black or black w/ other colors? Is it an evening wedding?
Ask the bride how she feels and follow her lead.

I wore a black dress w/ a purple rose to my cousin's evening wedding but his bride said it was absolutely fine.

I wore a black sundress with turquoise and green designs to my daughter's beach wedding. The groom's mother wore a black sundress. Both of us are as happy as can be to have our new SIL/DIL in the family.

I would wear black. It is not like you are going to be wearing a veil, LOL! I have worn black to many weddings and so has a lot of people. I was in two weddings and the dresses were black.

I see nothing wrong with wearing black.

Have fun!
