2nd vote for CoolPix.

(Really, you can't go wrong with either Nikon -CoolPix is made by Nikon-, or Cannon. Those are the two BIG names in the industry that are actually affordable. Leica, for example, makes great cameras... if you have a spare couple grand)

Technically that one is my "son's" camera (but I use it all the time). I have a DSLR HE borrows though, so fair is fair ;)

FOR SAVING MONEY:

Wait until Amazon's Cyber Monday sales. You'll be able to pick up electronics for the LOWEST price all year. We got a Flip for $200 $50, $300 camera for $60, saved a thousand dollars off a lens, etc. LOVE Amazon's Cyber Monday sales... and no waiting in line!!! Click. Buy. Love.

Nikon makes some amazing cameras under the CoolPix label. I would check them out. I have the Nikon D3100 but the package I got was $650. Still our point and shoot smaller cameras can't come close to the quality I get with that camera.

I don't have a CoolPix but if my Cannon ever kicks it that will be the direction I go. :)

I'm glad you asked this! I have a DSLR but want a point and shoot for ease of carrying around! Sorry I don't have any recommendations...but I'm looking forward to your answers.

The Nikon Coolpix are awesome. I got mine a year ago after studying consumer reports. Even better ones have come out since I got mine-I needed it asap for a trip and the store guy said, you should wait a week, the new ones are coming out :(. Mine is easy to use despite mega features. I think it was about $200 bucks. It has great action settings.

I have a Lumix that I received as a gift several years ago. I have been very pleased with it. I'm not too sure about the action shots – I don't do many, but I love the extra zoom power it has (25x), more than many other cameras.

Good luck with your search.

I have to go w/Cannon! I have had both Nikon, and Cannon, they are both good. I have had better results w/the cannon though. I was a photographer and used a cannon in the studio. My last personal purchase I went back to Nikon b/c they didn't have the Cannon I wanted in stock. I wish I had waited. Nikon is a great camera, but I just prefer something about the Cannon. Esp. the power shot series of point and shoots. :)

I LOVE LOVE LOVE the Canon PowerShot D10 12.1 MP Digital Camera. We actually got this camera for my daughter because it is waterproof (really... like you can swim with this camera) and very durable, however I use this camera all the time! My husband is a professional photographer... he has camera equipment I don't understand how to use. He is always surprised at the quality of pics from this camera. It does do action shots well, but I'm not sure about how close it can zero in on the subject?! It's about a $250. (ps... the other Canon PowerShots (non-waterproof, etc) are also meant to be really good too.
