Calling All Hair Dressers - a Coloring Question

Hi - I am between colorings and have minimal stray grays that I probably notice more than others. I am currently expecting and trying to avoid having hair dye on my scalp. If I go to Sally Beauty and buy a color and brush, my question is can I brush the color onto my roots and thereby avoid getting the majority of the color all over my scalp? I have never colored my own hair before but was thinking of trying it anyway to save some $$ (I would still go to the hair dresser maybe every other month and by next month I think I would be safe). Any other advice for Moms who want to avoid color on their scalp during pregnancy but have a minor problem with grays or mismatched root regrowth? Thanks in advance for the advice!

What can I do next?

Never ever heard of people not coloring their hair while pregnant so I googled it.

It's not a big deal because the color doesn't pass through the placenta. No one has ever attributed a birth defect or issue from their mother coloring her hair while the little tyke was inside her.

If your doc said don't do it and could give you concrete reasons with evidence to show it was dangerous then I'd go with that. But I don't think that most would say that.

In animal studies this was found.

" Animal studies have been done with doses 100 times higher than what you would use on your hair. These studies have not shown any abnormal fetal development or birth defects in animals."

"The Organization of Teratology Information Services (OTIS), which provides information on potential reproductive risks, says that animal studies are reassuring and that there are no reports of hair dye causing changes in human pregnancies, despite the fact that many women have colored their hair during pregnancy. OTIS also points out that very little of the chemicals in hair dye is actually absorbed into your system."

They do all sorts of stuff to the animals, 100 times more than a person would be exposed to and nothing happened to the fetus of pregnant animals.

I think we all try to be extra careful when we're making a baby inside us but sometimes things go way overboard. Women of my generation ate tuna, smoked, drank alcohol, went to parties where pot was being passed around and whether we toked or not there was plenty of plenty of second hand pot smoke and more.

Our kids turned out okay for the most part. I worked in a christian child care facility and was a good christian wife to an evangelist. I didn't do those things but I didn't ever hear any of the things you ladies hear today. It's confusing for sure.

I took a medication for morning sickness that was later found to cause massive birth defects. A friend of mine took the same drug and her son was born with one arm extremely short, like his hand nearly on his shoulder. I was fortunate that my daughter didn't turn out with a massive birth defect.

There are so many old wives tales out there now and I am glad I won't be having any more babies because I'd eat what I wanted, go places I wanted, and have a normal pregnancy as much as I could.

I am not a colorist, but have spent my whole adult life having my hair colored, even during my two pregnancies. I had two different obstetricians (one for each pregnancy) and I asked both of them what I should do instead of dyeing my hair. My first doctor said, "Look, pregnancy is hard enough on women's looks without letting their hair go to hell. Get your hair done. It's completely safe." (He was a salty old dog, that doctor. ;) My second OB said that the use of hair dye has been well studied and has been found to cause no problems whatsoever during pregnancy.

In short, just keep up your normal coloring routine. You will be fine. So will your baby.

Congrats on your pregnancy!

I am a lic hairctter.

I did not color my hair when I was pregnant.

A few things u could do: I have an organic bronzer. I dusted a little of it on my roots in the front.

There are root touch-up sprays. I have never used one.

Some of my friends got highlights because the bleach was put on the
foil...same could be done w/ color.

Funny I just watched a few youtube videos on this. I have the Clairol Beautiful Collection (wash out) to just do a few touch up hairs. They told me to put some thick cream or vaseline on my scalp at the part and hairline.

I decided you youtube it and found someone who had some pretty severe allergic reactions and she started studying the ingredients.

With that, I thought maybe I wouldn't use this stuff. Then I found this from LUSH. TUTORIAL | Lush Cosmetics Henna Hair Dye (Caca Brun)

It took her a few hours and I don't know how long it lasts, but thats a long long time for me. I am still looking for the perfect solution. But I think I like LUSH's product better. At this point I haven't tried either product.

When I got pregnant with my first, I stopped coloring my hair.

She is 6.5. Haven't colored my hair yet, and I'm 42, so I have a lot of grays :-)

Not what you wanted to hear, but really, it's only a few months. Your hair will have that beautiful shine of pregnany anyway.

Not a hair dresser, but I thought the fumes are also a big problem when you're pregnant, not just skin contact. It was never worth the risk to me.
