Bum Genius Cloth Diapers

I have heard good things about bum genius diapers, so I bought a couple to try out. The washing instructions are a little annoying, though, and I'm wondering if it's really necessary to do it the way they say to (once in cold and once in hot for every wash, using only 1/4 the detergent you'd use for other clothes....). If you use these dipes, how do you wash them? Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks to everyone for your detailed replies about how you wash your dipes. Very helpful! And thanks for the Charlie's Soap tip -- hadn't heard of them!

Another mom mentioned Charlie's Soap but I wanted to also recommend that you try this out. It has worked great on the diapers and I have also switched to washing all my clothes with it. I wash my diapers on the warm/warm setting and do a presoak setting as well. Charlie's soap gets them nice and clean and removes the odor. Like other moms have said...the key is to line dry the diapers in the sun. Good for you for going cloth! I personally think it is so much easier.

I wash them in cold(as I do all my laundry) with all my other lights- with a non-scented sensitive laundry soap. The main thing for me is hanging them in the sun to dry as that is the only thing that gets the stains out.

We use these and do not follow the directions and they come out fine. We wash them with the other white cloth diapers that are not bum genius and so, we soak them in water in the bathroom (in a container that has a touch of bleach in it). Then we wash as normal on hot cycle. it has not ruined them or anything.

I store all my diapers in a dry pail and then do a short rinse/wash on cold and then a long wash on hot. I line dry them too which helps keep the smell down and helps the outer wraps last longer.

I love BumGenius diapers! They are so easy. My husband was against cloth, but when we started used them - he caught on fast and is now a big fan.

Anyway, as far as washing, we have a front loader (Kenmore HE) which has a 'sanitary' cycle - so it's one button and that's it (3 hours later!). I think it might be a little tough on the diapers, but we've had them over a year and they are only now starting to show some wear (in the velcro). I figure if I have to replace them little by little over time it's still much cheaper than disposables.

Hope that helps.

I don't know much about BG diapers. I use G diapers. I keep my rinsed poopy diapers in a bucket filled with water and my wet diapers in a dry diaper pail. When I wash I run them through a spin to get the water out of the poopy diapers, then a cold wash with just baking soda, then a hot wash with just a tiny bit of detergent. And sometimes, if they still stink (like, say, if I've been lazy and didn't wash my diapers soon enough or I'm not able to line dry outside) I'll run them through an extra warm rinse and spin. I know it seems like overkill and I'm using too much energy, blah blah blah, but this is the trial and error way that I keep my diapers from stinking. Plus I try to use my line outside to dry my diapers whenever I can (which sometimes in Humboldt Co. isn't very often) so I feel like I'm saving energy there.
Another way I keep the stink away and get more life out of my diaper covers is by not using my dryer and letting them air dry.

I only use bumGenius one size pocket diapers. I also sell them in my store. I used them with my third child and am now using the same ones with my fourth child. They are the best thing since disposables in my opinion.

I keep them in a pail and wait until I have a enough to do a load of laundry then I simply run them through a large cycle on hot with half the soap I would normally use. Often I will run an extra rinse as I do not have this option on my washer I manually reset it to rinse and spin just to make sure there is no residue left in them.

Once a month or when neccessary I will wash all of my diapers (I have 27 diapers total) in a super load on hot with a 1/4 cup bleach then extra rinse. It has not affected the colors on the outside of my diapers and they are just as white and clean on the inside as the day I purchased them. This helps keep them bacteria free and fresh.

Hope this helps.

R.,

About a year ago a mom posted a great note about these diapers. She totally explained how she washes them in detail and made it sound easy. If you can't find it, contact me and I'll see if I saved it.
Good luck.

We keep a bucket by the shower, rinse the pooopy diapers immediately (then put the water in the toilet), then store the diapers in a bucket with water and oxy. I would recommend the organic cotton over the polyester - they absorb a lot more consistently.

I use cloth, tho not bum genius. I do wash them that way, but if I'm in a rush, I do just do 1 warm wash. Definitely use less detergent, because if you use too much it builds up and the dipes start smelling. I'd suggest you experiment with washing and see what works. Honestly, the 2 washes is what I do because the cold gets out the stains etc then the hot sanitizes.

I used a no residue sports wash for a while (I assume they sell it at places like REI, although I got it from a friend) and that was the best detergent. Really got the dipes clean. I must go back and get some more.

And drying them in the sun is a great way to save energy and sanitize. If you put them in the dryer for about 15 mins before you hang them out, it helps keep them softer. Although they are nowhere near as soft as if you dry them completely in the dryer.

We use BG dipes and I just wash a load of them altogether in a regular hot cycle and then either dry them in the dryer or hang them out to dry. I love them but I haven't been diligent about closing the velcro when I wash them, so a lot of the velcro is ripping after about a year and a half of use.

I use cloth diapers, but my own homesewn ones, rather than BumGenius. I wash diapers twice, in cold both times, 'cause I don't have a hot water hook-up to my washer. You can wash diapers only once, but stink will build up eventually, and it's not nice. Laundry detergents with "optical brighteners" (most) aren't a great idea, either, as the brightener stuff (also fabric softener does this) coats the diaper & eventually causes them to be less absorbent. The best stuff to use is Charlie's Soap http://www.charliesoap.com . I started with it for diapers & baby clothes, & decided I like it enough to use for all the laundry. I have a few dozen diapers, and just wash a load of diapers when the diaper pail gets full. Then, I hang them up outside--that's how they dry best, & the sun helps sanitize them (& I don't have a dryer)
