I am a mother of a 7 yr old and a 9 month old and believe it or not a bounce dryer sheet really works. In the summer I up my dryer sheets to three in my kids clothes and rub them with one before they go out to play also stick one in their pocket that works to. I have done it for at least the last 5 years and the bites have been very few. hope this helps good luck.

White Vinegar! Its cheap & non toxic. I've used it for years and now use it on my 2 month old. (we also camp!)

Young Living Essential Oils is a company I do business with and they have a product called "Purification." It is an essential oil blend of: citronella, lemongrass, lavandin, rosemary, melaleuca, and myrtle. It is a good repellant and safe for use on children - just don't put it on hands or feet since babies tend to stick these in their mouth. You could dab it on the nape of the babies neck, upper arms, etc.

Who puts oil on a baby that is going out doors? Isn't there sun out doors? sun + baby + oil = one cooked baby, right? My daughter's pediatrician told us to use the Avon bug repellant/sunscreen and it has worked like a charm since she was a year old. We frequent (like every weekend) a beach known for it's biting flies and my daughter is NEVER bitten. She is about the only one (besides myself) who is not bitten and the rest of the adults are like a blood buffet for them. I hope this helps for you and good luck. :-)

You should contact your pediatrician and ask what their recomendations are. He might recommend something you wouldn't expect. The diseases that you can get from the bugs you are protecting yourself from can be much worse than a little exposure to DEET, so if your docotor recommends it I would use it. So ask your doctor. Oh, also I have heard that rubbing a dryer sheet on your skin works and also taking a garlic pill but I have never tried either of those methods.

I've been using California Baby sunscreen with citronella bug repellent in it. It seems to work well, and without the DEET!!

I would also recommend Burts Bee's, they carry the line at Walgreens.

Avon's Skin So Soft (just the regular/original scented SSS oil or spray...not the sweeter scents and not the SSS Bug Repellent/Sunscreen). Although the others work, the original SSS works just fine, has none of the extra repellent chemicals, and doesn't have the extra sweet smells that can both attract bugs and be a bit strong.

SSS does have a distint smell but it isn't bad nor is it a chemical smell like bug repellents.

Avon Skin so soft bug repellent sunscreen is nice because it doesn't spray and you don't have to worry about it getting in their little faces...plus the sunscreen is a great bonus! My son has really bad eczema and has since age 7 mos. and he doesn't react badly to it either!

I keep a bottle of Melaleuca's Sol-U-Mel on hand and spray the tents and the clothes, It works great and is safe and non-toxic, my DD has drank it before and the worse thing that happened was the runs for a few hours.
You could also bring your favorite incense sticks. Place them around the campsite and this will annoy most insects, it works very well on mosquitoes.
