Effective Bug Repellent

Hi moms,
I'm wondering what everyone uses to keep the mosquitos at bay when you take your kiddos out. We've been using Family Off (7% deet) which has been fine for most playgrounds. But it seems that if we spend time in someone's backyard or we're at a playground near water, Kenzi gets tons of bites. We're at the point where we don't even want to take her out to play - a 2 hour BBQ in a friend's backyard just isn't worth a week of hydrocortisone and benadryl, plus bandaids and long sleeves and pants to keep her from scratching!

Avon has the skin so soft line of bug guard/insect repellent. My family has used it for years. It's great. It comes in a lotion, pump spray, and an aerosol. They are deet free as well. Oh, and inexpensive. I stock up when they're on sale. Hope this helps...

I don't like using anything with Deet so I use Burt's Bees Insect repellent. It has natural ingredients that the mosquitos really don't like. Lemongrass oil is a major ingredient and you can smell it. You can buy it online at www.burtsbees.com it is really hard to find on the shelves at stores.

We use Melaleuca Sol-U-Mel. It is non-toxic and bio-degradable. Kenzi can drink it and not be harmed. We spary directly in the face and everything. We even use it for a stain remover and household cleaner.

My pediatrician recommended Avon's Skin So Soft Bug Repellent for older in kids. In babies, he recommended Avon's Skin So Soft Original Body Lotion.

I can't think of the name right now but Whole Foods sells it. It's made from lemon & eucalyptus (no deet).

Just remember never to combine deet & sunscreen together because
the sunscreen greatly enhances absorption of DEET into the skin and can potentially cause neurological damage. The more often this is done, the more likely damage can occur.

a friend of mine and also my mother both swear by bounce dryer sheets....rub one over your child's exposed skin & then tuck it in their pocket!

Any kind of bug loves my two year old. We started using Quantum Buzz Away. It's all natural citronella spray. I have to be careful of what I put on my lil one. She has sensitive skin and so far this product works great. You can purchase it at the Healty Approach Store in Colleyville. I'm not sure where you're at but they are off hwy 121 and Glade Road.
Good luck,

BB
