Bronchitis/Cold/Allergies

I have been sick for about 2 weeks now. 1.5 weeks ago I went to urgent care for coughing, fever, chills, aches and was diagnosed with bronchitis. On the zpack. Two days later not feeling at all better went in to primary dr and he put me on a stronger antibiotic, said my lungs sound clear and did some blood testing. Negative on the flu test. All blood tests came back normal and within a few days I felt better overall (still tired). However, I still cannot get rid of this hacking cough. I am now hacking up clear mucus (as opposed to that yellow brownish stuff). And it still feels like I cannot get a really deep breath.

I do have allergies but they seem ok but maybe it is really aggrivating the respitory symptoms. Also, I have had a really rough 6 weeks with my mom passing away, services, a trip to CA and then cleaning out her entire house and packing it all up/yard sale/donation. It was very dusty and family members helping did smoke alot.

Is it normal with this to keep on coughing up stuff? Should I call/go back to the dr? When will I be back to normal?

What can I do next?

Sounds like the infection is gone and you just have lingering symptoms. I had bronchitis three times in about a year after never having it before. I ended up with some major but undiagnosable breathing issues where I struggled to actually get enough air into my lungs (I could tell the volume was not normal when I exhaled) and I got dizzy to the point of nearly passing out several times. My doctor ended up having me on an inhaler for a while, which slightly helped, but even a chest x-ray did not show anything. It eventually went away on its own but it was really awful for a while.

When my middle child was recovering from RSV he was hacking up clear, sticky mucus, and my husband frequently has lingering coughs with mucus for weeks after antibiotics for bronchitis. (He has asthma as well.) So, all in all it sounds like you're over the infection and just stuck with the after-effects. :(

I have a terrible time with bronchitis every winter, usually end up with at least one round of antibiotics, and have to keep the cough subdued for the few following weeks so the cough itself doesn't irritate the bronchial tubes. I do also get noticeable help from Mucinex, homeopathy and acupuncture.

According to Chinese medicine, different organs are most susceptible to various emotional influences, and the lungs are the seat of grief or sorrow. So you might be particularly predisposed to having lung problems because of your recent loss of your mother, especially if you were close to her. Allow yourself to grieve as needed; it will probably help your lungs.

Wishing you well.

I think your on your way to recovery since your mucus is clear. Once I got very ill from cleaning my moms dusty house. Next time use a mask for sure. Your at the end of symtoms, you,ll be o.k. you,ll see. Take care.

It takes TIME... for the lungs to heal and normalize.

Did they check you for Pneumonia????

Secondary infections, can occur.
So watch out for that.

I once had a common cold. Post nasal drip etc. Due to the dripping, I got a chest infection. Just like you symptom wise. My Doc treated me for Pneumonia.
But I also have Asthma. So, that makes the lungs weak too.

Typically, the Doc will suggest going back in, for a follow-up check up.
Maybe you can do that.
If you are not getting better, and/or you are getting worsening symptoms etc.

And, since you are having a hard time breathing, I WOULD go back to the Doctor.

If you have the inhalers still I would use them, albuterol should work quickly.

Similiar situation prompted my doctor to start me on Singulair. World of difference and I am NOT coughing.

Have you tried going with natural remedies? Sounds like your immune system could use a boost especially after taking antibiotics.

I thought about something else:
I recommend checking your cleaning supplies - especially laundry detergent as we're basically married to it. He could have allergies to the chemicals. A good place to check and see what's in the things you use and the potential health risks - www.householdproducts.nlm.nih.gov/ingredients.htm
Chemical ingredients to look out for:
• Sodium hydroxide
• Hydrochloric acid
• Butyl cellosolve
(2-Butoxyethanol)
• Formaldehyde
• Bleach (sodium hypochlorite)
• Ammonia
• Sulfamic acid
• Petroleum distillates
• Sulfuric acid
• Lye (potassium hydroxide)
• Morpholine

You sound like you have something similar to what I had in January I needed to use an inhaler for a few weeks.

Last winter I had bronchitis four times and pneumonia once. It can take up to a month for the cough to really stop after a severe case of bronchitis. However, if you really are having issues getting enough air in and out, you should go back to the doctor. I ended up on an inhaler for the rest of that school year (school based physical therapist) with no more bouts of bronchitis. Your doctor can determine how strong a medication you need to be on to control your symptoms. Good Luck and feel better.

I went through the same thing about a month or two ago. I had an inhaler as well as the zpack, if you think your not be able to breath enough go back to the dr and they will prescribe you an inhaler of antibiotics and this definitly helps you breath better but it makes you cough more to get that cough out so you can breath alot better so that is what i suggest :)
