B..
Coughs with colds usually outlast the cold. But you have the complication of asthma. All "usual" stuff is irrelevant. Go see a doc.
2 weeks or so ago, I got sick. (normal head cold...runny / stuffy nose, headache, sore throat, etc) Went away in a few days. Well, its been 2 weeks since the main symptoms passed and my cough has progressively got worse. Sounds hoarse and chesty but nothing productive, hurts when I cough too hard (in my chest). is it just something that will pass or should I go in? I literally never go to the doctor unless I know it is something so I don't want to run in if it is something that should go away.....I dont' expect a diagnosis online, lol, I just dont' want to be dramatic and would love some opinions? :) I have asthma too so I have been taking my inhaler as well. Even tried Robitussin :/

I would go to the doctor. The cough isn't just lingering but is worsening and unproductive.
You may need an antibotic or a steriod to get it resolved. So many things it could be, most requiring a doctor. Better to go in and see.
Go - you have asthma, so you can't take chances that this is turning into pneumonia. I had pneumonia (a little bit) and I didn't know it till I saw the x-ray. Someone else told me to go to the doc because of the sound of the cough.
Go to the doctor. My family passed around bronchitis and my DH ended up with pneumonia and DD had "a possible touch" of pneumonia. This IS something. You have a chest cold that is not getting any better. And you have astma. Please go. Pneumonia knocked my otherwise very healthy DH on his butt for 6 weeks.
sounds like bronchitis or maybe even pneumonia.
Or, um, have you thought maybe the asthma? Is it a cough or is it THE cough? My not-so-little man, who also has asthma, calls it "the cough"....and it flares up with usually viral stuff, like a cold or the flu, or strep.
So IMO: sounds like something that won't go away by itself...go to the doc or urgent care and get yourself an antibiotic and/or some prednisone (yeah, I know, yuck!)
Feel better
I just went to the doctor with exactly the same symptoms and discovered that a very bad sinus infection is the root of the problem. Who knew???? I coughed so hard that I would black out!
I hope you get some relief soon!
I think your symptoms have passed the "never go to the doctor unless..." test. Call today! It might be nothing after all, in which case you won't need to worry any more. Or it could be something serious, in which case you'll be glad you didn't wait longer. Make the doctor earn his/her money. Go.
Until I read the part about asthma I was going to say I have the same thing. But in this case yes, doctor is in order.
Mama:
I think you know the answer to this....
you need to go to the doctor.
You could have walking pneumonia...it could be a SEVERE case of allergies....it could be pneumonia....I don't know...but I do know if Robitussin doesn't "quell" the cough? and you have asthma??? and the inhaler's not working? Girl...you need to go to the URGENT CARE....don't wait until Monday. Go to the Urgent Care NOW..
Best of luck!! Please let us know how you are doing!!
I had a cough once that lasted for - I kid you not - 8 weeks.
I steamed myself regularly, used Mucinex, gargled with salt water, used warm saline and a neti pot, drank echinacea tea, tried throat sprays, took a daily vitamin, drank chicken soup, and had yogurt daily.
I never had a fever, I tried OTC allergy meds (this was over the winter) but it didn't make a difference.
My ribs were aching from all the coughing.
Finally I saw a doctor and it wasn't whooping cough or walking pneumonia.
I told him everything I'd tried - he said what I did was fine.
He said sometimes a cough just lingers and there's nothing you can do about it.
He offered an antibiotic but since I'd never had a fever I didn't think I needed it.
He put me on a cough medicine with a little codeine in it for 3 days and that finally worked..
It seems like every fall I get a cough that lingers..... ends up giving me laryngitis, also!
It usually appears to be allergy related.... and it may be me, but I end up clearing my throat/coughing so much that I end up with laryngitis.
I try Mucinex, allergy meds, decongestant.... nothing seems to work. Sometimes I have to go in, and they give me a cough medicine with codeine in it, and that tends to help.
Mine ends up lasting a couple of months, anyway.....
Most MDs like to evaluate coughs that persist for 2+ weeks, particularly if the cough is keeping you awake at night. Were it me, I'd go get looked at.
GO to the Doctor.
Its about time.
You will not get a proper diagnosis, otherwise.
For example: I got like that one time.
And you know what? I had a secondary infection from a regular cold. And, I was on the brink of Pneumonia.
And then I had to have oral antibiotics.
What you have could be who knows what.
And only a Doctor, can examine you properly and diagnose you.
Go see a Doctor.
Oh and by the way, I have Asthma, too.
Pneumonia and Bronchitis, can be and is, contagious. Depending on the type it is.
And, things like inhalers and cough syrups or cough suppressants, will NOT make an illness or infection, go away.
Go and see your doctor.
Yes a cough can last weeks after a cold.
Yes, allergies are in the air with the change of seasons, so you could be suffering a bit with this.
Asthma cough is common and people do not even realize that is what they have because you do not feel like you are having trouble breathing..
One other thing, as we mature, we can suffer from acid reflux and not even realize it.
But your doctor can check you out and diagnose this.
Definitely to to the Dr. Last Spring my daughter had pneumonia and the cough that you explained sounds similar to hers. She started to get better after she went on the antibiotics but it did take a while to be able to cough out all the fluid that had built up. Hope you feel better soon!!
I got sick the first week in September, with a cold, used a saline rinse/neti pot and the congestion in my nose went away,
had some phlegm in my chest and had a cough for about a week that produced something, but it was the weirdest cough because it was gagging me and after I coughed I couldn't breathe. but I would only cough maybe 4 times a day, when I woke up and after meals.
I never had a fever, and didn't feel awful, but it's been over a month and drawing a deep breath can set me off again. and I still don't feel can have dairy. that sets me off for sure. I can't even really describe it, I've had sinus drainage from my nose to my throat before, this isn't it, it just feels like there is phlegm at the very top of my voice box choking me.
cough drops don't help, robitussin doesnt' help, flushing it out with water has been the most effective. but I can't figure what the drs could do, as it really doesn't seem like it needs an antibiotic with no fever and no thick
mucus.
a couch medicine with codine isn't going to fix the problem right, it's just going to supress the cough but if I only cough 4 times in 24 hrs that seems excessive.
But I don't have asthma, and if you are needng an inhaler you probably should get checked.
Get yourself to a doctor, stat. Seriously. And make sure you have your rescue inhaler on hand every minute. Urgent care clinics are open all week. Call now.
umm well lets see cough for 2 weeks. If you were a kid the school would have sent you home lol. You need to go in. They will likely put you on a steroid of some sort or an antibiotic.
