My son has had many issues with his braces and now he says that he keeps biting now on his cheek so he is constantly pulling on it to get it out from his bite. He has had many brackets pop off and we have taken him many times and they said this all normal and that his cheek will adjust but i forgot to ask... Is it possible to stretch out your cheek from all this pulling?

What can I do next?

Take him back to the ortho and tell him whats going on. I can't believe the ortho did not tell you what to expect. My ortho told me down to the detail of what he would experience and how to handle. If they are new it's a matter of getting use to. You can also put wax on the jagged edge so that it won't scratch the cheek. Ask about that. If they were just recently adjusted, it might me from that and perhaps the ortho didn't cut the wire or bend the wire close enough, so that it wouldn't be jagged. Good luck.

I doubt his cheek will stretch out. Most likely he will bite little pieces of skin off and cause the inside of the cheek to develop scar tissue. It's not that big of a deal. I have scar tissue on both cheeks cause I bite them all the time.

How long has he had them?
My son had a few minor issues the first couple of weeks, really no big deal. Then he got a herbst appliance (mechanical mouth! lol) and he had a couple of new things to learn to manage around. After 2 weeks or so, he was good to go. Just went to the regular dentist yesterday for a "regular" checkup and cleaning, and they were impressed with how well he is managing to clean, even. He's had all the stuff for about 6 weeks now. He goes back in a few weeks for the bottom braces to be put on.
I expect he'll have another week of "getting used to" dealing with them... and then he'll be right as rain again.

If you have ANY questions or concerns with braces, call the orthodontist. Really. Call them. I'm sure they have heard everything, and will not mind telling you the likely outcome or making suggestions to alleviate any issues.

I remember having braces. First thing is that he has to follow exactly what the Orthodontist says. This means you have to find out the "rules" for braces too. Your cheeks do get sore and it does feel like you're biting down on them. Your son really has to wax his braces good until he gets used to them. The first couple of weeks are the hardest. Brackets should not be popping off, especially since they are sized to the teeth and glued on. Braces popping off can be caused by the bracket being too big for the teeth or what the wearer is eating or drinking. Carbonation in sodas can eat away at the cement and cause braces to pop off. Excessive soda drinking can cause cavities underneath the braces. Just ask your orthodonist if you don't believe me. As someone mentioned, hard foods and sticky foods can also loosen up the brackets. For the first few weeks, I was very careful with what I ate or drank. The cement needs time to cure, it's not like superglue. I didn't like anything food on my braces and brushed my teeth after eating. I ate soft foods that I didn't have to bite into like soup, mashed potatoes, macaroni, apple sauce, my mom used to cut my sandwich up in tiny bite sided pieces, cut-up salami or pepperoni in italian dressing, cheese, etc. (no chips, no candy of any kind, no hard pretzels, etc.) I drank water and orange juice. Once I got used to the braces I started eating regular sandwiches on sliced bread and other more normal foods, but nothing really hard like nuts or hard pretzels and absolutely no soda and no gum. When I got my braces off, my teeth looked perfect. Took my first sip of soda and "I used to drink that junk?" It took me a long time to ease back in to drinking soda again. (lol) Didn't do so good with the steak though. One funny story to leave you with...I thought it was all the "bad food/junk food" you had to watch.....Not really, I was the first patient to get spinach stuck in my braces! Yep, it wrapped around the tiny spring he had in my mouth and he had to pick it out with tweezers. (Boy, did everyone laugh.)

Get him back to the orthodontist and tell him or her what's going on. I hope your son gets through this soon!

Every time my ortho makes a change to my braces (a major change) I bite my cheek. I just put some wax on it, and call it a day. After a week, sometimes two, my mouth gets used to it, and I work around them.

If it gets too bad, then I would call the ortho.

Use wax as others said. Regarding: "He has had many brackets pop off and we have taken him many times and they said this all normal" Just so you know both my kids, ages 12 and 10 have had their braces for about a year and have never once had a bracket pop off. I don't really limit what they can eat as much as they tell you to. Other than hard candy and really sticky stuff like gum and caramel apples, they eat everything (in moderation of ocurse). So I'm just saying that I wouldn't really say it is normal for brackets to pop off a lot. What a huge hassle to have to take him in to get those fixed! I would be highly upset if I had to take time off work more than once or twice ever, to deal with that.
