Bottle for Breastfed Baby

I will be going back to work soon and need some help getting my 3-month-old son to take a bottle. He has only been exclusively breastfed and we have been trying for a week now with no success. We have been using the medela bottles and nipples that came with my pump. Perhaps another one would work better? What we have tried so far: I have left the house and had daddy try to feed him, waiting until he is hungry, feeding him when he is not hungry, and spoon feeding him. Can anyone offer any other suggestions?

What can I do next?

My son did not like breastmilk from a bottle. He would only take formula from a bottle. One of my daughters never did take a bottle...unfortunately some babies are just stubborn that way! Good luck!

I also used the Playtex drop ins and then the Ventaire bottles. The main reason I found them successful is the variety of nipples that you can try with the bottles. My son would only take the soft darker colored nipple. Not really because he was breast fed but more because it was softer. The good thing though was without having to purchase a variety of bottles to see which one worked, you can purchase different nipples to see if he liked any. The key for us was finding the right nipple, versus finding the right bottle.

We used Playtex drop ins as well. All the lactation consultants that I spoke to suggested these.

I gave both of my girls the Playtex Nursers with the silicone nipples after they were nursed (1st one for 4 months and 2nd for 2 months). I didn't have any trouble with them. Good luck!

The Playtex Drop-Ins bottles are awesome for breastfed babies! The nipples are soft and feel more like the breast.

I LOVE the "MAM" brand bottles/nipples. And it is BPA free.
You can get it from www.amazon.com

My son LOVED these bottles, and it does NOT accumulate air bubbles in the bottle as the baby drinks. And the nipple is not some super round bulbous protrusion which some babies find hard to latch onto.
It is a natural nipple.

Or, what my friend would do, if feed her baby with a medicine dropper... her baby in the beginning was having a lot of difficulty, and this is what would work for her baby, when worse came to worse.

All the best,
Susan

Every baby is going to be different in their preferences. We had one of a few different kinds, and I had to be "on-call" my first few days back to work with our son in case he didn't take a bottle.

Both our kids ended-up doing well with the Platex Drop-Ins, Avent, and Dr. Brown's (which are a pain to clean). But, it was a lot of trial and error.

The best advice I received was to have someone else (preferably you leave the house) give the bottle. If your baby can smell you and your breastmilk, they will prefer it every time out of habit and instinct.

I never received a call to rush home to feed him - he did perfectly fine despite never having taken a bottle before my first day back.

When you give your baby the bottle, don't gently put it into his mouth. Slip it in and push the nipple up so that it pushes on his soft pallette. This forces some liquid to trickle into his mouth so he can taste it before deciding he doesn't want it. Keep it at that pushed up angle until he swallows. When he swallows he should naturally suck the nipple of the bottle a little bit. He'll push it out with his tongue. Do it again. He'll learn to like it soon enough. (Used this on a premie who was very particular about having his momma's chest - it worked.) We used Parent's choice clear nipples and angled bottles for both our boys and they had no issues - we got them at Walmart. The flow of the nipple seemed appropriate and we never had to poke or make the hole bigger.

Good Luck!

Wish I would have thought to ask this question for our little one, same problem exclusively breastfed and would not take a bottle. After purchasing EVERY bottle on the market we found the playtex drop-ins to work the best as well. She takes them with out any problems. Good luck!

My daughter never did take a bottle. At 7 months she went from breast to a cup --free flowing though, she wouldn't do the ones with the no-spill valves. We did try every bottle, Playtex drop- ins, waited until she was hungry, I wasn't in the house for hours, etc. Nothing worked for her. Some babies just won't take a bottle. Good luck.

I used Avent bottles with the number 1 nipple. The number 2 flow was too much for my son until he was quite a bit older. Once we got the right flow my son had no problem taking the bottle. I thought the bottles included with the Medela pump were pretty terrible so I only used them for pumping and then emptied into the Avent bottles. I think what you're doing right now sounds great, you may just need to find the right bottle and keep persisting!

It sounds like the drop-ins are the most popular. Just to add a couple options, you can try cup feeding or using an eye dropper.

I had the same problem and tried so many bottles. I was finally able to get her to take The First Years Breast Flow. It has a 2 nipple system and it looks funny but it's supposed to be just like the breast so that baby doesn't have to change their tongue position. My daughter will only use this one. Oh, and I know this goes against most ideas, but I'm the one that got her to take it. She took comfort that it was Mommy even though it wasn't mommy's breast. Good luck.

For both my sons I use Playtex drop-ins. I breastfed both my boys and this is what I used.
