Botched Hair Cut

Silly me tried a new salon that is a lot closer to my house. I should have known by the 70's decor to turn around and run. The stylist cut my medium length hair in less than 10 minutes. It was like she was in a race! Needless to say, my hair cut is awful! I had wonderful sweeping bangs that I kept at the sides. They were slightly below my eyes and looked nice.
They are now about 1/2 inch ABOVE my brows! And with my slightly wavy hair, they appear even shorter because the wave makes them bounce up! And she "layered" my hair even though I told her I was trying to grow my layers out! She was cutting so fast, I couldn't stop her!
I look like 1982. In fact, if I curled my bangs up, it would look like my junior high picture!
My bangs are the real issue and I'm afraid that all can be done to help them is to wait. But I have something coming up in a month that I was planning on looking nice for. Is there anything I can do besides wait for my hair to grow? any styles I can do? I have been wearing hats and a head band. Looks fine, but not the style I want to go for. Luckily, I'm a stay at home mom with 2 kids under 3, so it's not like I need to visit the public very often. :)
HELP! Any advice is MUCH appreciated!

So What Happened?

Thank you all for your suggestions. It made me feel so much better to know that this is not an uncommon thing! There are many hair butchers out there and we've all fallen victim to at least one. I will just wait, patiently, till my hair grows. I also plan on going back to my first stylist and have her do my hair for my event. Thanks again for such wonderful comments and suggestions!

Gelatin helps hair grow. Jello comes in all kinds of flavors. I used it for a damaged nail and my hair grew like wild fire too.

I've made this same mistake...bangs so short I looked like Mamie Eisenhower. Could you use a straight iron on the bangs, maybe they would "grow" if straightened. Maybe a cute new short cut for the Fall...and start all over again with the layers. Best of luck to you, and it's probably not as bad as you think - A.

Hi N.,

Try using a flat iron on your way hair with a little bit of a straightening product. It will make your hair look longer, plus thats trendy right now. Try using the flat iron on your bangs as well, and then spray them and blend them in to the side just a bit. Depending on the look you are going for, you could also go to a different salon and have them shape your bangs for you (i.e., cut them differently).

Hope this helps!

Time cures all ills! I'd try some of the other suggesitons here as far as a flat iron or gel. I was just adding a little of my empathy for you because I had a bad hair salon experience myself and know how you must feel. Have a great day anyway.

Hi N.,

I had the same thing happen to me several years ago. I ended up seeing another stylist to get the cut fixed. Yes, it was much shorter than I ever wanted, but she made it managable.

Her name is Jamie Hay (I recommend her to everyone!) and she works at the JC Penny salon at Paradise Valley mall-unfortunately I don't have her phone number with me, but if you want it, send me an e-mail.

Good luck!

I too have had a bad hair cut. I have a great stylist on the East side of Tucson, who as long as you know what you want can do a great job. Have you gone into a Hair Salon and just asked to see if someone would be willing to show you how to manage this bad cut till it grows out. I am sure someone out there would be willing to help you. Good luck and let me know if you want my stylists name.

Oh my, How frustrating! It should be more manageable in a couple of weeks. Maybe you could clip your bangs back or to the side??? Not sure if it is too short for that. I clipped my bangs to the side and had my longer hair hang over the clippie. Not sure if that will work but it's a thought. Good luck! BTW~ I've officially fired everyone from touching my hair. I've been trying to grow it out and for some reason everyone thinks my hair must look cute short because no matter where I go, they cut it short. I have to throw a royal fit before my visit in order to get a trim. If I say "trim it," it gets cut too short....UGH! Finally, my hair is past my shoulders so I'm "trimming" it myself from now on. My hair is curly so who will notice if it's not even. At least it will be long... :)

All you have to do is part your hair on the side and pull the bangs over with the hair you drag from one side or another. Actually, you could leave a little wisp and pull the rest over.

Oh N., how awful!

I totally feel for you. I have sweeping bangs too, because of wavy hair. If they're not at least 4 inches long, they are totally unmanageable. Yeesh...

My only suggestion is to perhapse try a pomaide (sorry - ?sp). It's heavy and waxy, but in the past I've used it on my hair after the blowdryer to "tame" the funky bits. Don't use a lot - just a teeny dab on the tip of one finger - on the very tips of your fringe - to force a little control on them. Pinch between 2 or 3 fingers and pull straight down.

Good luck!

No fun!
Luckily you can pull them (the bangs) straight back and secure with bobby pins or tiny clips.

I've seen many movie stars wearing this style lately in magazines...most of the hair down and framing their face with just the bangs swept directly back and secured. Does that make sense?

I love the look but can't wear it myself (my face is not the right shape to pull it off).

Good luck! I will send you "grow out" wishes!

I can totally feel for you! I'm not sure if it would help, but maybe you could try a straightening iron just to flatten out the wave and give the appearance of more length.

If your bangs are the problems, I would pin them back on the very top of your head with a slight push forward,(like all the models are doing.)
Or you can pin them down, right into the rest of your head.
Or you can get extensions which would give you no bangs, and long hair again.-I recommend Sunny's on Alma school l and baseline. Very cheap! I just bought 14 inch extensions for 46 dollars genuine human hair (indian)
good luck

I somewhat know how you feel. My 3 year old daughter just chopped her own hair, so I took her to get it fixed and the only thing they could do was do a boy cut. Everytime I look at her hair I cry just because it's super short. But just like everyone has been telling me, it will grow back, it's just hair. But when it happens to you, that's the last thing you want to hear. So good luck and I feel your pain!!

Ok this may sound screwy right off but id say go back to them.
(LOL I know I know)
Call the manager, tell them you were unhappy with the haircut and why. Tell them you have an even comming and need some ways to work with what you have now. Have ANOTHER stylest go over your hair (without scissors!) and show you what you can do untill it grows out.
Ive had to do this b4 when my husband took my DD in for her cut. I went back and had it redone. Alot of times they want to keep customer and if you come in with a complaint and are nice then they will try and work with you.
Depending on how big the event is... see if you can get it prof. styled for free! Never hurts to ask.

The best thing would be to do is flat iron them lightly and make sure that they are texturized. You can still have bangs that are shorter that don't look 80's. As long as they are texturized they can look very soft and feminine. That's too bad about your hair. As a hairstylist I know its important to listen very intently to what somebody wants. A hair cut should never take less than a half an hour. I would complain for sure!!

my suggestion is leave it alone and let it grow out some - you can go back to the butcher and demand a refund, too - then go back to the stylist you trust just before your event and have them do what they can for you - good luck

what is it with these "stylists" that get scissor happy and go to town??!!! i have naturally curly hair that touches the small of my back and is layered to a point. the last 2 times i have gone to have it cut straight across the middle of my back, it has ended up SHOULDER LENGTH! i can't comprehend this! so thanks for letting me vent, we have all been there!!! try to see someone who can fix it until it can grow out again. otherwise, headbands, headbands, headbands! good luck!

I went to a girl right after my second was born and I had a lot of little baby hairs growing in. I asked her to blend them, and she cut them all an INCH from the top. It looked awful, to say the least. They were so short, I couldn't do anything, but if yours are long enough, maybe you can pin the middle section back and do some chunky curls with the rest? Seems popular right now, as others have mentioned. I would probably also schedule an appointment with another stylist to have her show you how you can style your cut and fix anything she can, maybe like someone said the manager of the salon you went to and then it may be cheaper/free. Sometimes it only takes a couple small cuts to look better. Or get a bunch of girlfriends over and have someone else try to style your hair. My sister-in-law always has different ideas than me and can do things with my hair I would never try, but end up liking! Good luck!

I'm SO sorry... I've been in your shoes and it's awful.
My stylist moved and I went from place to place trying new people, and no body could get my cut right. One time my bangs looked like a roller coaster ride they were so diagonal and uneven!
Anyway, she moved back, and she's the only one I trust right now! She could work magic with your mess and help you live through it til it grows out a bit.
Amy at Great Clips Williams Field/Gilbert by the Frys.
I hope you'll give her a try... she's wonderful.

I'm SO sorry that happened to you!!! If you'd like, you could come in to my salon and I could take a look at it for you. Perhaps I could help you style it in a way that looks better while you wait for it to grow. I've had a lot of experience with that sort of thing and so has all the girls I work with. Our salon is called Divine Hair Design in Mesa on the north west corner of Val Vista and Southern. The # is: ###-###-####. My name is L.. Let me know that you are from Mamasource. I just hate it when I hear about people who don't listen to their clients! I'd much rather cut too little then too much. You can always cut more later if you don't take off enough!
Let us know how it goes.
