Books for Boys

My almost 8 year old son broke his arm yesterday, so he is going to be pretty bored for the next few weeks. So I am looking for ideas for books that he can read to keep him busy. He asked for a "series book". Something to do with sports would be GREAT (he broke his arm playing hockey). Would love something available on Kindle, but not a must.

Thanks for your ideas!

This isn't a sports book series but George Brown Class Clown has a series of books. My daughter reads them sometimes but they are geared for boys. They are pretty funny.

My son likes the Daniel Gutman books. Here is a website that has a listing of his books, not sure if there are hockey ones, but I know there are some pretty good baseball ones. http://www.dangutman.com/pages/books.html

Good luck, hope he has a fast recovery!

Would he be interested in Sports Illustrated for Kids? You should be able to get a subscription on your Kindle. We have a Nook and get National Geographic for Kids on it for $4.99 a month but we can watch videos, read articles and look at pictures - all kid friendly and very interesting and educational. Hopefully SI for Kids is the same format.

I'm a reading teacher and always looking for good sports books to hook boys. I always tell parents that I always have the best intentions when I recommend books, but I always encourage parents to preview books I recommend. You know your child better than I do. You know what they can handle maturity wise. Also, because I don't know your child's reading level some of these might not be appropriate. These are some of my favorite sports authors. I have not read all of their books so some of their books may be for older kids.

These aren't sports books, but my stepson loved all the "Diary" books and he is currently into the "Goosebumps Horrorland" series. He is 9.

I can empathize. My 12-year-old suffered two concussions from hockey this season and is still recovering over two months later. I second the recommendation of the Dan Gutman books. He wrote a baseball card adventure series which is very good. The first in the series (although you don't need to read them in order) is "Honus and Me." A young boy is able to use a baseball card to travel back in time to the time of the player depicted on the card. I read a couple of them and liked them. My oldest son loved them. We actually had an email correspondence going for a little while with Dan Gutman. I don't know if they are available on Kindle.

The Dangerous book for boys by Gonn Iggulden is awesome. My three boys literally fight over it. It has all kinds of cool little stories, projects and must do's for boys of all ages.It talks about how to make the best paper airplane, how to build a fort, set up camp, fishing, it even has a section on"what's the big deal about girls". I am not sure if you can get in on Kindle.

I can't help with sports theme, but here are some series my 8yo has been burning through:

The 39 Clues (there are a number of series within this and it also has accompanying games he can play on the Internet) **

Goosebumps

A to Z Mysteries

Animorphs

Guardians of G'Hoole

Cat Warriors (if he likes cats) **

I know at least the ones with ** are available on Kindle but I don't know about the others. You can also get some choose your own adventure books on Kindle, my son loved the one about climbing Mount Everest.
