Hello Mom's out there!
I am turning 28 next month, I have had one heck of a year so far raising my 5 1/2 year old son who thinks he is a "teenager" by myself. And a busy year myself with my career. I have never done anything special for my Birthday and have never cared to. But this year I want to. I have about 5 girlfriends to invite. Does anyone out there have any ideas for a small birthday party? Any ideas would be really helpful & appreciated!

What can I do next?

Jan has some great ideas. I just turned 29 last week and this year I really didn't care but next year I want to do something fun.

A girls/moms night out is always fun. You pick the place or what to do. Dinner/movies, manicure/pedicure, bowling, etc etc...

I agree staying overnight at a hotel is great. My husband and I did this for our 6th anniversary we stayed at a nice hotel with a consiarge level. It was very nice, had a great time! And I got the idea from another mom who did the same thing but it was a girls weekend away.

Hi K.,
I would first like to say it sounds like you are doing a wonderful job with your son. I raised my older daughter alone until she was 12 and I felt the same way, always worried I was doing the wrong thing. I held a lot of the same values as you mention, always teaching...anyway, I was often complimented on how well behaved she was. Today, she is a wonderful adult. I couldn't be more proud.

Now for the birthday bash! I would say there are plenty of things you can do. Dinner then a night out at your favorite show or club. If you are broke, like I was for 12 years, have a sleep over with pizza or something easy, a few movies, and a few drinks. Scarry or funny movies would be the best. Bake your own birthday cake, cupcakes, or cookies while your friends are there.

Have a blast! And, HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!

Hello K.,

First, kudos to your for raising your son. Being a mom is a tough enough job & doing it by yourself is even tougher.

As for your birthday, I think you deserve a trip to a day spa with your girls. It can be intimate enough for all of you. Another idea would be to go wine tasting & having lunch together there. Have you heard of Color Me Mine or anything of that sort? They paint their own art pieces. Other places like Color Me Mine allow you to bring wine too.

Hope you figure out what how to celebrate, you deserve it! And 'Happy Birthday' too =)

If you can get someone to keep you son over night, certainly take advantage of it. For my niece's b-day next month, all of us Aunts are taking her to the Improve. (It's her 21st!) We had talked about taking her to Pachanga, but we couldn't afford a room at $300 a night. We had also talked about renting a Limo to pick us up from the Improve. (We have a Van, so Hubby was going to drop us off.) Limos run about $65-$95 an hour, so that was kind of ruled out as well. We are planning to take to an Improve with a hotel within walking distance "just in-case". All of us are excited about it and have already taked about how fun it will be to make it a family tradition for the girls 21st b-days.

If leaving your son with someone over night isn't an option, then have a "Girls Night In". Rent your favorite movie, have each of the girls bring a Dinner course, (instead of gifts) and play you favorite game. It will be memorable, but inexpensive. (If you want to send your son away, you could still do this istead of going out.)

Last but not least, if you're brave enough, (I'm not) you could host one of those "Adult Toy Party" for your b-day. I'm certain it would both fun and memorable by all that attend. Just be prepared for some "Special" birthday gifts.

Enjoy your b-day! You deserve it. ~J
