I've done it many times. I think the best thing is to wear older underwear (lest you get an wax on good panties), and be prepared for some redness and even bruising. I sometimes get bruising (maybe once or twice) although not everyone does. Don't do it the day before you want to be in a bathing suit - give it a few days for the redness to disappear. I also think it's important to give the esthetician a good idea of where you want the line to be - go a little higher than you think you need. Just go to a good salon that does a lot of it.

Yep. I get a full Brazilian wax once a month. I'll tell you this. Don't go to a salon that does all kinds of stuff, as well as waxing. You really want to go to someone who ONLY does waxing, all day every day. It's kind of like, you wouldn't go to someone who is a manicurist to get your hair colored, because they're not really an expert in hair color. Waxing is the same way. You want someone who only waxes, and who uses high-quality wax. The better the quality of wax, and the more proficient the person doing the waxing, the less it will hurt.

The next thing to realize is that the first time you have one, a bikini wax WILL hurt. A lot. Worse than childbirth. (But mercifully, it will only go on for 10 minutes, and then you'll be done for a month. ;) My advice is to take plenty of Tylenol or Advil half an hour before you go. Don't overdo the caffeine, don't go when you have PMS. Caffeine and hormones will make it hurt more.

The good news is, as long as you go at least every 4 weeks, it hurts less and less each time. I've been going for several years now, and when I was there yesterday, my waxer and I chit-chatted the whole time. I could feel it, but it wasn't enough that I couldn't talk while she was waxing. (The first time I had it done, I was practically crying!)

I can't imagine paying someone to rip out my body hair by the roots.
I just let it grow and use a beard trimmer to keep sex and flossing separate activities.
Fortunately, my boyfriend understands that body hair is an indicator of sexual maturity, and has no desire to go to bed with a woman whose crotch looks like it belongs to a prepubescent child.

One of my best friends owns a waxing salon, and that is all she does: waxing.

It's true what Hell on Heels said below, you want to go with someone who specializes in waxing only, all day, every day.

I don't get bikini or Brazilian waxes because I don't like waiting for the hair to grow out again for the next wax. I stopped doing leg waxes for this reason. I usually can't wait that long and just go ahead and shave.

I do love having my arms defuzzed, though. My skin feels so great next to soft cotton shirts when the hair is all gone!

I'm very fair-skinned and did have a reaction once many years ago (not at my friend's salon). My friend thinks it must have been the wax. Make sure your esthetician uses a high quality wax and follows strict hygienic practices. I've never had a reaction, other than brief redness, at my friend's salon.

There is a bit of pain involved, although a lot depends on your tolerance for pain, and it does diminish the more you wax.

Hope you find a great salon that can help you.

Absolutely worth it! With shaving you end up with bumpy, irritated skin that grows back very fast. With waxing, it gets pulled up from the root, so it lasts longer. Does it hurt? A little. Nothing I can't handle.

I only do it before I go away on a vacation (not monthly) because I a) want to save $ and b) I have ingrown hairs afterwards. Same if I shave.

SUGARING
I just heard about a process called Sugaring, where they use sugar instead of wax and allegedly has less side effects. Not that a regular wax is something to avoid.

I'm going to try sugaring this week and if I see no ingrown hairs, I'll do it on a regular basis. :D

I get a basic bikini wax (removing the hair that pops out of the underwear).

Who to go to?
Like everyone said, to people who do this as their speciality. Though now I have learned to have my eyebrows done by people whose specialty are eyebrows.

I haven't done it. If getting my eyebrows waxed brought tears to my eyes, I can't even imagine getting anything or anywhere else waxed. LOL

Besides I have course tough hair that fights a great fight. It always wins every battle ultimately LOL.

Looking forward to reading other responses.

I am very fair skinned. The first time I was waxed I bruised terribly. Since then it has not been a problem. Although it hurts, I love the results.

Hurts like hell for about 15 seconds after each yank. Then no shaving or anything for 4-6 weeks, depending how fair you are and how fast your hair grows. So much better than shaving if you are prone to razor irritation.

I'm talking bikini line, not Brazilian. I have waxed bikini line for 20 years and never would I ever consider a Brazilian. My pain tolerance is not high enough.

What to know? Have the hair in the area trimmed to 1/4 inch (think eyebrow length). That's long enough for the wax to grab it. And if it's too long, it yanks more and hurts more.

Go somewhere where that is all they do if possible. You should never bruise after and if you do, that person does NOT know what she is doing.

Did it a billion times. Myself and had it done in a couple of salons. If you do it yourself, don't have more than like 1/8th", 1/4" growth or wax gets stuck in hair and HURTS!!!! Same if you have it done in salon don't have long hair, just enough for wax to grab. And GO SOMEWHERE GOOD. I had a clueless girl do it once when I was pregnant, and she left bad bruising because she didn't even know you have to hold the skin taught and yank properly. In a salon that knows what they're doing, it's quick, easy and even fun :) Way better than doing yourself, but way more expensive too....call me crazy, but I don't even think it hurts too bad. But it's been a long time since I was new at it, and I have a pretty high pain threshold :)

Love waxing! I used to get my legs and bikini waxed all the time, but it gets pretty expensive. Now I only splurge once or twice a year on salon waxing and I bought an epilator to use at home.

Take an antihistamine before you go for your waxing so you will have less inflammation afterward.

I used to do it a lot. It was worth it. Not hugely painful - stings for about 2 seconds, and then hair free for 6 weeks plus no razor bumps. I don't do it anymore because I got laser hair removal - even better!

I used to do get bikini waxes all the time, and leg waxes, too, but I tired of having to grow the hair out in between waxes. It drove me nuts!

That was the only negative for me, though. The pain wasn't too bad, and it was totally worth having smooth skin without having to shave nightly. I loved it.
