Bible Studies by Authors Other than Beth Moore

No offense to Beth but it seems the only Bible studies my church in The Woodlands wants to do are by Beth Moore. While she is a very good author is she really the end of all ends when it comes to Bible studies? Some women at my church have admitted they refuse to do a Bible study other than Beth, some for her wisdom, some for her outfits and hairstyles - that kind of sounds like hero worship and doesn't the Bible say something about hero worship? Maybe I'm new or something but aren't we supposed to be studying the Bible and not the study leader? I'm curious if Beth Moore would be as "popular" if she looked like Susan Boyle but had the same powerful message.

Are there other Bible studies you have done, written by authors equally wise as Beth? As you can tell from my other posts, I could really use a study that deals with what God expects from His church and how can I, as a Christian, behave in His church.

My women's ministry leader said when they don't offer Beth Moore, the study attendance drops to nothing. I guess my attendance to the other studies are nothing to her, but that's a discussion for another day.

What can I do next?

I have done many Beth Moore studies and I must say she is a gifted teacher and most women seem to connect with her because she is so open about her own shortcomings. She has said many times in her video sessions that she does not want to be worshipped and that her entire purpose is for God to get all the glory. But I agree that there are some women who put her on a pedastool and lose sight of the purpose of the study. Two other teachers who are also really good are Priscilla Shrier (she is the daughter of Tony Evans) and Kay Arthur. There is a church in the Woodlands called Stonebridge Church that does many different bible studies. I think they are starting a Priscilla Shrier one in the fall. I hope you find a study that brings you closer to God. Maybe God is telling you that you should lead a womens Bible study! Good luck and God bless!

Bible Study Fellowship (BSF)and Community Bible Study (CBS) are both a non-denominational study. The first meets at Faith Community church on Research Forest on Wednesday mornings from 9 to 11. The first 2 Wednesdays of May they'll be doing registration for next year - they run from Sept thru May. CBS meets at The Woodlands United Methodist church at the corner of Lake Woodlands and Grogan's Mill on Wednesday mornings from 9:30 to 11:30. The church only has the place - they are both separate from the denomination. Both conscentrate on God's word exclusively. CBS will be doing Kings and Judges next year - probably focusing on the life of David. BSF will be doing Matthew (I think). They both have childcare, but you must register your children - don't take them the first time to either study. BSF is much more formal and REALLY focuses on God's word - lots of rules (some people find it cumbersome, I always felt it kept everyone focused on HIM). Both are fabulous studies. They both offer evening studies too. BSF is on Monday night at First Baptist church on Grogans Mill at Sawmill, it runs from 7 to 9 and they have student study at the same time 1st grade thru 12th. CBS offers an evening class, I think it's on Tuesday - don't really know anything about it, but if you're interested, I can find out for you. Both the day classes are ALL women. My church, Christ Church United Methodist also offers various other Bible Studies at various days and times - including some Beth Moore!!!! Blessings to you on your journey.

What timing.....my MOPS group had a special guest speaker today from "MotherWise" a global ministry based in Houston. Since my MOPS group is ending for summer vacation, we're planning on having a Bible Study over the summer based on the Mother Wise founders books. The author/founder is Denise Glenn. Their website is www.motherwise.org . Check it out! :-)

Fellowship of The Woodlands Church usually offer 5 or more Bible studies so there is a lot to choose from and I would encourage anyone to take studies from different authors to get a different perspective. In Beth's defense, she is humble and she absolutely does not want to be put on a pedestal.

Sounds like you need to find another place to go to Bible Study. There's no rule that you have to attend Bible Study at the church where you have your membership. I don't--I've always sought out Bible-based studies, and one of the best authors I know of is Kay Arthur. She teaches the inductive method of Bible Study, and it will help you dig out God's truth for yourself.

There are many churches in the northwest part of town that offer these studies. They are called "Precept" studies, and you can choose from the format that requires a LOT of homework, to the more informal one called "In and Out" that doesn't. Either way, get in the Word. It is the only way you can learn what God has for you and what His will is for you. It will answer SO many of the questions you have been wondering about.

Start calling some of the larger churches. They will be knowledgeable about what's available out there.

I just remembered another good study. It's called "Alpha". I don't know much more about it, but a good friend of mine took some Alpha classes and loved them.

Hope this helps!

I liked Experiencing God by Henry Blackaby. It goes into developing your relationship with God, so that you can know His will for your life. I've gone through the study twice and have gotten something new out of it each time. The King's Daughter by Diana Hagee is also good. Not as in depth, but I appreciated the message it taught. The Blessed Life by Robert Morris is very good as well. If you want to go straight to the source, the J. Vernon McGee commentaries are good when you just want to pick a book out of the bible to focus on.

Please consider "Seeking Him" by Nancy Leigh DeMoss. The subline is "Experiencing joy through spiritual revival". Nancy is a wise and humble writer who seems to want to teach women to be in touch not only with God but with other women, which can be applied to being in touch with other Christians. So it may be something you're looking for.

And no, Beth More would not be as popular if she looked different, sad to say. This is, after all, America, and this society has high regards for physical attractiveness. Beth is cute, bubbly and well dressed - which many women either strive to be or seek out friends like that. Her attractiveness is justified because she knows her bible inside and out. But remember, God looks at the heart - when its all said and done and we stand before Him, He won't be asking why our friends or bible study leaders were cute, bubbly and well dressed - He'll be asking how you obeyed Him and how you glorified His name - not the name of others - while on earth! From that perspective, when we make it all about God, then nothing else matters, even if you have to do Beth Moore studies for the rest of your life. Blessings to you.

Hi M. S,

My church just finished (yesterday) a wonderful bible study by Angela Thomas called a Beautiful Offering! It was great! Angela is just as good as Beth and I was and still am a big Beth Moore fan but it was great to be introduced to someone new. The study was based on the Sermon on the Mount and how to apply and make ourselves offerings to God. Also I don't know if you are up for it or interested by my church (HopePointe) is having a Ladies Night Out featuring Laurie Cole and it is called Beauty by the Book. If you are interested let me know or go to www.HopePointe.org to find out more info. Good luck and I'll let you know what our fall bible study selects when I find out.
