Bedwetting

My 5 year old son goes through his pullups every night, which of course means washing sheets every day. We have cut of liquids an hour and a half before bed and it just doesn't seem to work. He's in the biggest size pullup I can find. Am I just out of luck?

What can I do next?

I have the same issue, except we moved our son back to diapers because I was tired of washing his sheets every morning since he leaked through his Good Night. Pampers makes a size 7 diaper that is available at a few stores- we get ours at Target. I would stop using pull ups as they aren't meant to hold a lot. They are meant for the occassional accident (my DH works for Kimberly-Clark who makes those) and even those they don't hold in well. If you can't find the diapers, then switch to Good Nights. They are meant to replace diapers for older kids. I talked to our pediatrician and many others out there and kids are not considered to be developmentally delayed in potty training at night until they are 7. I was told the part of their brain that wakes them up at night to go potty is still developing until that age. So, your son may not be able to wake himself up at night yet. I have heard people who have used those bed wetting alarms at age 7 and they worked well. I know people that set their alarms at night and wake up their kids to go potty. I, personally, am not to those points yet as my son is only 5. I want him to be trained, not myself or some alarm. I will wait until he is closer to 6.5 years old to try those measures. I don't want to medicate him, which is one option when they turn 7.

Dear J.,

I have not had a bedwetter, but have heard some great testimonials from moms who have.
Have you considered sleep alarms? I had a friend who had great success with that.
Have you considered a vitamin/ mineral deficiency? Often times, children eat a lot of food that are high in sugars- processed sugar and hidden sugars found in most snacks. The excess sugar causes a deficiency of B vitamins. If you would like more suggestions or a company you can trust, let me know. I would ve happy to help.

Hi J.,

We have gone through some of this at our house as well. First of all, make sure you have the pull ups that are for "overnight" protection, or the GoodNites kind. Then, I would make a habit of waking him up just before you go to bed yourself and have him use the bathroom. At that point he will have been asleep for at least a couple of hours and hopefully that last time in the bathroom will empty his bladder enough that he can get through the night without soaking the bed.

Sorry I don't have any other suggestions, but good luck to you!

We had been going through this with my 7yo. Like you we were changing sheets every night, limited liquids, cut dinner liquid altogether. I talked to my ped. He was just a sound sleeper and his body needed to be trained to wake up. My ped recommended to go to bedwettingstore.com and get a sound alarm We have the Roger. We tried a vibrating one and it did not work. Anyways, after 1.5mo he doesn't wet any more. last night was his first night without the alarm, and he did well. Email me if you have any questions.

My three year old son was fully potty trained for months, overnight and all. Recently, he started wetting his bed everynight. It was a huge hassle to clean pjs and bedding everynight, but I was scared to start the diaper thing again with pull ups again so I decided to create our own routine. Liquids stopped by 7 for an 830 bedtime, potty before bed, potty before I go to bed and then I'd set my alarm for about 4am for him to go again. After about two weeks, we dropped the 4am and he was fine. Another week, and he started waking me up at about 4 to take him. It's worked quite well, but the biggest issue is stopping liquid at the right time. If I don't (like yesterday-oops) I'll have sheets to clean. Good luck, it's a long process, but he will get it.
