Bedrail for Toddler Bed?

We converted our son's crib to the toddler bed last night and he fell out. The toddler bed has a rail but it only covers about 1/3 of the side. Are there bed rails that work with toddler beds? The ones I see only work with twin size mattress or above.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you everyone for your advice. We ended up getting the rail from Ikea. It was a little long for the opening but my husband was able to make it work. After all that, my son moved himself to the twin size bed that is in his room, LOL. All that fuss for nothing. He's been doing great but I think I might buy the foam bed rails just for peace of mind. Thank you everyone!

Try ikea, their bedrail clips on to the side of the bed rather then going under the matress. Hopefully this works.

We actually have a twin bed for our daughter and we use the foam bed rails. They are so great!! The bed rails come in two differenct lengths, 21 inch or 27 inch and come in a package of 2. We bought 2 sets of the 27 inch, 2 for each side which fits the majority of the length of the bed. We placed them under the mattress pad and they keep in place. I bought them off e-bay, here is the link for the 27 inch http://cgi.ebay.com/Childs-Toddlers-PORTABLE-TRAVEL-BED-S...
You can travel with them as well! Take Care, T.

Hi there. We stuffed a body pillow between the mattress and the side of the bed and that worked. :)

Hi C., We had the same problem, and at first I tried using two body pillows to prevent any bumps, but it didn't work. The only one I found that actually fits a toddler/conversion crib bed is from Babies R Us. It's about $75 and is wood (I think the brand was Kidco), which you can finish to whatever decor your room is. It's expensive for what it is, but it's worth it. We gave in and bought one and I'm glad we did. On a side note - it tells you to place in the center of the bed - which leaves an entrance/exit on both sides... follow these instructions - we tried butting up the one end to create a closed corner and only one entrace/exit - but it was too big and he found a way to wriggle in his sleep and fall out of it. Go figure! :) Good luck... -E.

I just saw one in a catalog for one step ahead. They have a website www.onestepahead.com. It is a railing made just for convertible cribs/toddler beds.

yes we have had the same exact problem. we still put the rail on the side of the toddler bed but didnt fasten the straps. if you position it to were the legs are straight down, andhave it outside the bed rail bars, but inside the bottom bed (main bar) it should hold your child in just fine. (at least thats what we did,) and it worked! good luck!

I don't know about bed rails, but a friend gave me this idea which worked for us. We put one of those long pool noodles underneath the mattress pad and sheet along the edge of the bed. It won't stop them from getting out, but it takes a little effort and it lets them know when they're hitting the edge. My daughter has not fallen out since we put it in.

I think that if a kid is old enough to use a toddler bed,
they're old enough to learn where The Edge Is.

Some of the earliest lessons
I taught my kids were about The Edge.
This worked well to show them
what challenges Edges created,
as well as helping them to be on
an eternal Edge Hunt.
Think about it, physically,
they're everywhere: where land and water meet,
shelving, room divisions, lines, circles, walls, fountains...
the list, as I said, is eternal.
An adrenaline seeker, my son played alot on edges
(including, sking at two and snowboarding at four).

Daughter had hesitations with her Edges.
She always played it safe back then.

There were only rails on the bed
when my kids had a lofted version;
otherwise, with beds near the floor
(a mattress on a boxspring for my first child)
and pillows at the potential impact place,
you're pretty set.

Of course this means you clear any hazardous things
(hard toys, tables, etc) from the area,
and celebrate the newfound independence
(with alarms on exterior doors, etc!)
knowing you're little one is growing up.

Its an exciting transition!
(I bought new books too,
for when they woke up those first mornings;
they each sat on their bed reading until I came in).

Go to Lowes, buy a couple of 2 x 6 boards and make your own rails. Much cheaper then ordering rails to fit your bed. Or if you push the bed up against the wall you only need one. If you don't want the rails just buy some big body pillows and put them on each side of him.

I asked the same question a few months ago and didn't get the response I was expecting. I never found one, but I was told that some Wal-mart stores have one. We did not purchase the toddler bed rail so the whole side is open for our little one, but it is really close to the ground. We put a couple of couch cushions next to the bed and he fell out of bed for a few nights and we have had no issues since. Good luck

The walmart brand bed rail is very thin and non-bulky. This will fit in between the mattress and the existing bed rail and will go 2/3rds of the way across the bed. I had a similar problem where the bed rail that was part of the bed only went up a few inches and I was very uncomfortable with that. This is when I went on the search for a bed rail that would work and found the Prents Choice brand at walmart to work perfectly. You will have to push the mattress down, but it will fit.

I searched for one and never had any luck. With a recommendation from the sales associate at Burlington Coat Factory, he gave me a great idea, if you are using the crib it works! I used the Summer brand mesh side rail, which comes with tether straps for under the mattress, which you attach to a clip on the opposite side of the mattress. Try using the straps and tying them around a crib rail on the other side of the crib instead of attaching them to the clips.

I was told that the reason they do not make the side rails for the toddler bed is because the mattress does not have enough weight to it and if the child leans on the rail, it will put pressure on the brackets and cause the mattress to flip, which makes total sense to me! Good luck!

I could never find anything,so I would use a gate for the door.I put the bed against the wall, and on the open end I stood the gate up,and put a pillow,or something to hold it there. It worked great!
