Kids and Twin Beds...

If your child sleeps on a twin sized bed, do they use a bedrail? And how old is your child?

Just a little background on our sleeping situation... the apartment we live in was built for me as a young, single adult... it has 2 bedrooms, but since one was a spare room/computer room when built, it was built back into a hillside, and therfore, has no windows... this is now my son's room... he has a great bed in there, along with all his clothes and toys, but due to the fear of him not having an alternative exit in an emergency, I don't let him sleep in there... he sleeps in my room, in a twin bed that is sandwiched between my bed, and the wall, so he can't fall out... I'm looking to rearrange my bedroom, where his bed would no longer be against my bed... getting more and more pregnant makes it really hard for me to get out of bed with having to scoot down to the foot of the bed... I could switch sides with my husband, theoretically, as his side is not against anything, but I don't want to sleep on that side! We don't have much room to play with, but I'm trying to devise a way to separate the beds... he'd still be against the wall on one side, and wondering about a bed rail... he isn't used to sleeping without the boundaries of the wall and my bed, so I'm sure he'll fall out of bed... I know that's no real big deal, he's 5, not an infant, and the floor is capeted... so we will probably not bother with a bedrail (although we have one, and wouldn't have to go buy one)... but I was just wondering whether your child, who sleeps in a twin size bed, uses a bedrail... and how old your child is... if it was a full size bed, I wouldn't even consider it, since he'd have plenty of room to move around... but often, in his twin bed, he ends up sleeping sideways, with his head at the side wall, and his feet up on my bed (annoying! lol) So he does squirm quite a bit...

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

@ CC D. - We have that exact bed from Ikea in my son's room... the reversible bed... but it's not the one he sleeps in right now... we are moving soon, and when we disassemble the bed to move it into his new room, he will start sleeping in it there... but for now, he has to stay in my room.... but yes, it's a great bed!!! And we have the star tent also!

Most people stop doing this when the child is around 2-3 years old. If he falls out of bed he'll land on the floor and wake up. He'll probably remember that and when he feels himself on the edge he'll move over from then on.

Our son started sleeping in a twin bed (against the wall on one side) when he was 3 and we never used a rail. He is 7 now. He has fallen out a few times in his life but he sleeps through it! He used to squirm more and I think sleeping in a twin bed made him more aware of the sides and falling off and now he sleeps in one place.

My son never used the bedrail, though we thought he would need it at first. We ended up buying a bed from Ikea ( http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/10123996/ ) that had the option to flip it and make it kind of like a bunk bed. We didnt use the top and actually put the ladder against the wall so he couldnt climb it, but we put the mattress directly on the floor at first. He did fall out a couple times, but he learned his boundaries pretty quick. Then we flipped it, so its just a normal height twin bed (with a cool canopy attached). and he hasnt had a problem falling out.

Ikea has a lot of low twin beds in their kids section if you have one near you. They also have one that is sort of like a daybed ( http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/S99887444/ ) which you could put the open side against the wall if need be. It might be to "crib like" that way, but it would at least be safe.

...Or maybe just throw some pillows on the floor and call it a day! :)

Our daughter had a rail on her twin until probably the age of 4, then we removed it. Her floor is carpeted, the bed isn't high off the ground, and she's never fallen out of it. Even if she did, she wouldn't be harmed. I think at 5 yo, he'd be totally fine.

At 5 he's ready to sleep without a bed rail. My son never used one, but he's always had an ikea bed and they are low to the ground.

We bought bed rails when we switched my oldest to a twin around two. After a week I realized he wasn't going near the edges anyway so I took them down. The other three I never used them and no one ever fell.

My oldest went into a twin bed when she was 3. We never used bedrails. She did fall out a few times, but quickly learned where the edges of her bed were. We put blankets and pillows on both sides of her bed (not against a wall, I'm always afraid they'll fall between the wall and the bed) so if she did fall it was cushioned.

My toddler had one of those car beds, they really don't have rails and he ended up on the floor several times.
If the bed is low I wouldn't worry about it.

I never used bedrails on the girls' twins, they were 3 and 5 when we bought them. In fact they had toddler beds until that point that didn't have the bedrails on them. Only when the twins were bunked did the top get it's bedrail.

My oldest was in a twin bed with rail until 4 years of age. I have two boys, and we got our boys a bunkbed when my youngest was 1 1/2 years old and he sleeps on the bottom bunk with a guard rail and we have a step stool on the side for him to be able to get up and down easier. We will have a guard rail for him until age 3 or 4 as well. Kids do usually squirm quite a bit during the night. My boys end up sideways as well, and often times my youngest will end up facing the foot of the bed. lol We just let him be. If it's cold, we'll end up helping him face the right way and recover him with the blankets. It's funny how wild they get when they sleep. :-D
