I get the small size plastic bands at Wal-Mart and put them in a small pony tail then weave the barrette above it,they plastic band doesn't show if you put it right on top of the band.
Hello,
My one-year-old has a nice head of hair but her bangs are igetting too long. I don't want to cut them just yet so I've been pulling them back in a barette. Problem is, she pulls all barettes out of her hair...even if I distract her with a toy while putting it in, it's a matter of time before she finds it and yanks it out. Any ideas? Along those lines, what have you found helpful in not making hair washing pure torture? She screams everytime it's time to rinse it out...not sure what to do except buy the visors that protect the water from going in to their eyes, but she'll probably yank that off, too! ;)

my daughter is 5 and still sometimes screams with rinsing.
there are lots of barettes that wont "fall" out but nothing is going to stay in if she actually pulls them out. just keep trying and maybe instead put it in a tiny ponytail with those little plastic elastics. i had one daughter who left them all in, the other one always pulls them out. each kid is different.
I did the pebbles look right on the top of the head with my girls. It's so cute at this stage.

Rinsing: You could get a hand held shower head to help with rinsing.
Barrette: If she is pulling out the barrettes, don't put them in. It doesn't matter what kind of barrette you put in if she doesn't want them in her hair. If it is really an issue for you, you may need to go ahead and cut her bangs.
There are new types of dry shampoos that work great. Tigi makes a great one. Check your local salon. As far as the clip thing goes I guess I wouldn't fight her on it. It may be uncomfortable for her and that is how she is telling you.
We use those plastic little hair ties from WalMart. They don't tangle much but are still hard for kids to get out while HOLDING hair in place. The come clear or in multiple colors.
Honestly, barettes are a choking hazard at this point, so I wouldn't use them. You're finding out quickly that she's just going to pull them out, your going to lose them, she's going to lose hair and it's just a pain. I think the weight of the barettes may be what's bothering her too. They do tend to pull on hair. The ties are extremely light and not bothersome at all. If you DO use a barette, try looping it under/through the hairtie. The tie will hold her bands securely out of place and will also help you have something to clip the barette onto making it harder for her to pull out.
If you want "fancy" hair ties or clips, you can try Gymboree too. They have cute ones that coordinate with outfits and seem to hold a little better too.
As for the "rinsing" problem, you can either teach her to lay back, hold a dry wash cloth over her eyes OR buy her a little visor. We have one of those flexible neoprene ones that has a fabric on the top and a coiled elastic band across the back. We keep it on a hook in the bathtub. We only use it when rinsing. It lets water flow freely over their heads and ears while protecting their eyes and faces (breathing). We got ours at a local festival for crafters, but I have seen similar things at Target, etc. too.
Hope these ideas help you!

(I think we own EVERY hair tie, barette, hair band, etc out there!!! LOL)
There was a time when we joked that my baby didn't feel anything on her head...yeah that only lasted till she was about 10 months. I buy the regular metal barettes but I learned where to put them. We do not want to cut her bangs, and if I put the barrette on the side she finds it and yanks it out within a few minutes. If I gather her bangs, do a twist and pull them straight back (almost like a bump or a pompodor) then barrette it in the back of her head she doesn't find them that easily.
Also I rinse my baby's hair using a cup that has a soft flexible piece in the front. The goal is to place that flexible piece on their forehead and dump the cup. The piece protects their faces so water doesn't get in their eyes/mouth. You can find them at Babies R Us, wal-mart, baby depot. If i put a visor on her it would be in the water with teh rest of her toys and not on her head! =) Good Luck!
we started using headbands when she wouldnt keep in her barrettes.
