Baptismal Oil Has Stained Baby's Gown -- How to Get It Clean?

My daughter was baptized over a year ago. I recently noticed that the gown she wore has a large yellowish stain on it, which is from the baptismal oil that was used during the ceremony. It is 100% cotton, but the fabric is somewhat delicate. Any ideas on how to remove the stain? Should I take it to a dry cleaners? Or maybe soak it in a Oxiclean solution? Maybe soak with Spray 'n Wash?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Note: in answer to a poster's question, I think traditionally they use perfumed olive oil, but I suppose it could be anything.

What can I do next?

I swear by a product called Lestoil...which I have only found at Meijers. It's fabulous but it makes a huge difference if the garment has been through the dryer with the stain. With the Lestoil, you just cover the stain with the liquid and let it sit. Then toss in the washer on gentle and out it shoudl come. The stuff doesn't smell the best but it works so freakin' well.

Good luck.

If it hasn't been through the dryer, use any dish detergent designed to break up oil -Joy, Dawn, etc. Pour it on full strength and either use a soft brush or your fingers to work the soap into the stain. Wash on a gentle cycle and let the garment air dry. The dryer sets stains.

Maybe an enzyme treatment...be careful with what you use. Oil is not a easy stain to remove!

i agree with the dish detergent. I had an oil stain on a shirt that i had washed and hadn't come out. I used the dish detergent, and voila! out it came.

Your best bet to remove oil-based stains is Dawn dish detergent. Put it on and then lightly scrub it into the fabric with a very soft-bristled tooth brush, let it sit for atleast an hr, and then wash.

If the dishwashing soapt doesn't work, try using a spray called Simple Green. It's available at hardware stores. It's a degreasing spray and I've used it along with dishsoap. It works great for ring around the collar too! It may take a few tries, but it should eventually come out. Good luck!

PS -- For fresh oil stains, my grandma always put baby powder on there. The oil lifts out of the material and then you simply crape off the the powder after letting it set for a few hours. This is a great pre-wash method to help the oil stains come out easier.

Try the dry cleaner. I would start there. My kids old baby clothes had these same yellow stains. I never had much luck getting rid of it; even with oxyclean.

If it was a Catholic baptism, it is perfumed olive oil.
