Hello! I'm hoping you have some ideas about removing sunscreen from a pair of denim shorts and a cotton shirt. I thought that I had it packed well, but discovered that I hadn't when we got home and I opened my daughter's suitcase. There's a large grease stain on her suitcase, as well as a pair of shorts and one of her shirts has yellow stains all over it. Any help you can offer will be MUCH appreciated! Thanks.

What can I do next?

Presoaking in liquid tide and Biz will often remove yellow stains. Like many said... DO NOT DRY IN DRYER until you are satisfied that the stains are as gone as they will get. Heat from the dryer sets many stains. Hot water can also set some stains.

Another tip: Hydrogen peroxide and ammonia will often pull yellow stains from cotton tees (and other items). I have never had it pull color but it could. It works great on formula stains too. I just splash a little of each on the spots of a dampened garment and roll it up. Later in the day I will wash it. Repeat if necessary. Sometimes I just reapply without washing it through the day or overnight. I learned this when I managed a drycleaners, I saved many a tablecloth for my customers.

Before washing it, put some talc powder or baking soda on the stained areas. Let it sit over nite. I dripped oil on one of my shirts and used Lotrimin powder (it's what we have at the house) and it actually removed the stain.

I second the Dawn. It works great on grease stains.

I would try Dawn as a pre-treater on the clothes then wash in hot water. Do not dry them in the dryer until you are sure the stains are out or the heat will set them. You can use a diluted Dawn solution on the suitcase and rinse well it's just probably going to take a couple tries to get it out. You can also try Shout Advanced, the one in the blue bottle, it gets old greasy stains out for the most part.

You might try OxiClean stain remover. That gets out just about anything my two kids seem to get in their clothes. Grease, grass, blood, you name it. I usually spray it in, scrub it with a little brush or toothbrush and let it sit for a few minutes and then wash in warm water. I have gotten even chapstick out with this stuff, so sunscreen should be no problem!
Good luck!

I have successfully used Dawn dish soap on grease stains. Just squirt Dawn right on the spot and rub. Then wash it as usual. I usually squirt a small amount of Dawn right in the washing machine as well. Works like a charm!

Try soaking it in Oxy Clean, it has worked miracles for me. I use the smallest load setting with a full cup of Oxy Clean and the regular detergent. I soak the load overnight and then fill the washer to a full load. I also throw in more clothes and then run the load. It's amazing what it gets out. Hopefully this will work on sunscreen too.

You might try dawn dish soap - put directly on the spots, let sit, then wash. At this point the shorts and shirt may be ruined so whatever you try... any degreaser may work.

Also for future trips... try ziplock baggies to pack items that may spill or open. I do this for lotions, soap and such... anything that could potentionally make a mess inside the suitcase.

Hope you can get the sunscreen out.

Uh, well, there's this stuff I've seen at Dollar General called M30 I think. It comes in a little tub and it's kinda greasy feeling but it actually takes the grease out of stuff. It works pretty good on clothes and also it takes the tar off my van when I wash it at home.

Try goo-gone - it works great on grease marks, and hopefully it will work on the stain as well, you can put it on the clothes, let it soak in for a bit and wash. As far as the suitcase, that may be a little trickier, but try soaking, rinsing, mopping, soaking, rinsing, mopping......

Good Luck!

There are various ways to tackle sunscreen stains. Applying or soaking the garment in a pre-wash stain remover is very effective, particularly if you choose a stain remover that is designed for fats, grease and oils. Alternatively, you could rinse or soak the garments in white vinegar before washing. This is a very effective natural, home remedy for stains. Next, wash the garment in the hottest temperature that is safe for the fabric and the check for the stain again before putting it in the dryer. Never place an item in the tumble dryer before a stain has been fully removed as the heat could set the stain permanently. If the stain is still persistent, you could try an extra-strength bio-enzyme product which is designed to remove oily discolourations and use a brush to gently loosen the stain from the fabric. Remember, sunscreen can be very difficult to remove, especially from certain types of fabrics
