That really sucks. I'm sorry to hear that. Is the babysitter a teenager, if so you should at least contact her/his parents and gently tell them the situation.
We think we had a babysitter steal our video camera. We searched for days before realizing it may just be gone.
Last week, we had two new babysitters start (I just began working from home) and one acted really strange after one of her first times here. After that, we never saw it. Obviously, one of them had nothing to do with it and I don't want to get rid of the other one who I think had nothing to do with it.
Have you ever had this situation? What did you do? Unfortunately I am not expecting to get it back, but I am not sure what else I should do since I have little evidence.

If it were me, and this happened at my house. I would call the babysitters parents and tell them what I was missing. There is no reason you cannot 'check' around for your things. Most parents want their kids to do the right thing, and have them question their daughter. You may even get it back.
If you don't want her to babysit again, then don't have her babysit again. In that case what is calling her parents going to hurt...I wouldn't let her 'get away' with this.
It may be humiliating for all involved, but it can teach a very valuable lesson in the end.
That is just horrible.. How old were the sitters? Was one interested in photography or anything? Do you keep the camera in the same spot? You could pretend to call them and need them to babysit and see if one acts weird or something.... Then say something came up and you won't need a sitter anymore as a an excuse to call them. If they're younger (still living at home) you could talk to their parents although that get's tricky not insulting anyone. I was interviewing for a nanny position a few months ago and I was reading the requirements for the job and a basic job description at the bottom I read something to the extent of we will prosecute for theft out of our home, It really surprised me and got my attention, not that I would ever steal but that sure got my attention like wow don't mess with this family. You could call your local police dept. but.... I doubt they would be of much help. The next time you leave a sitter leave things in a certain way to test the sitter to see if he/she snoops...
I thought our portable dvd player went missing too and I searched for a week before I remembered I left it in a backpack in the trunk-- oops!! I felt like a idiot.
I hope you find your camera, so you can continue filming your son. I know I love photography and videotaping and have piles of tapes from my daughter it's so special to save all those milestones and special moments.
Maybe call them up and ask if they saw it while they were there. It's been missing for a couple of weeks and you've looked everywhere. And that you are just hoping that they might have seen it. Act cool about it and depending on their reaction you can ask them to return it and nothing will be done, but if they don't return it you'll mention your suspicions to their parents. Or tell them at least mail you the video tape in it. The camera can be replaced, but not the video.
we understand it's hard to find sitter but chances we take also finding them. never encounter this situation but have had lazy or told her no tv. we have never used her again and she is a friends stepdaughter, it's been about 2 years, my friend always suggesting to use her, haven't found the heart to tell her but we make sure we have our list of sitters.
personally if they are friends you need to get rid of both. you put a good apple w/a bad apple, it goes bad. i would ask briefly if they by any chance seen the camera, who knows they might, might not say, and you have made them aware you're missing something. even if they confess the trust has been broken.
best of luck

i would call both there parents and have there parents talk to there children and see if one of them will say they took it.. then you will know which one to get rid of.. good luck and hopefully you can get your camera back..
