I'm a first time mom of a 15 month old. We are looking to start using a local high schooler to babysit for us occasionally. We live in Snohomish County, Washington. This particular girl is a senior in HS. I am curious as to how much people are paying for their babysitters? What kind of things go into your rate selection? Just trying to get an idea more or less to fill my husband in on the going rates. Thank you in advance.

We are in Plano TX, (Dallas burb). We guaranteed a sitter $40 CASH even if we had to cancel the night because she saved the date for us.

Our weekly date night ran $60-$80 CASH.

Our daugher, 15, now babysits. She averages $10-$15 and hour depending on who she is sitting for. SHe regularly sits for a family with 3 girls 6-9 for 2-2 1/2 hrs and gets $40, another family of 3 children and averages $10/hr.

Pay well and you will get a good sitter that saves the date for you!

Wow, I do not have an answer for you but, I can't believe how much occasional babysitters are paid these days. I have not babysat for 20 years but back then I remember the days of $1.00-$1.50 per hour, per kid.

We have a 3 boys(11,8,5) and my sitter is in her late 20's. We pay her 12/hr. My boys are pretty independent and they don't need to be bathed, fed, or changed. I would consider her experience with toddlers, how many kids she's watching, and her age, too. Toddlers are more work with diaper changes, feeding, supervision, bedtime ritual, etc. Goodluck!

Wow, I guess I have it good! I'd never be able to go out if I had to pay as much as the ladies below!

I have lived in Lynnwood for 5 years, and used the same babysitter. (Now that she's working and in college we've also started using her younger sister who is a Sophomore this year.) When we started our two girls were 1 and 3, now our four daughters are 8, 6, 2 1/2, and 1 month. We still pay the same rate - $8/hour. Good grief, minimum wage is $8.35, so I don't really see a problem here.

Generally infants cost more than older kids who don't need as much care. I babysit twice a week, two girls who are 4 and 7, and I am paid $4/hour for the first hour with the 4 year old, then $6/hour when the 1st grader gets here. This is for a friend, so that makes a difference vs. it being my business.

There are other posts that have come through about this, with a lot of interesting points of view, so you might want to search the site for those since there are only a few replies so far to your question. Good luck with your decision!

For a high schooler, I would pay around $10-$11/hour - depending on experience too. Of course, you can ask her what she typically charges but at that age, I think around 10 is fair. Childcare professionals, with trainings and CPR/1st Aid certification typically make around $12, so I would start at $10 and go from there. Hope this helps! Good luck :)

Our sitter started when she was 15 and we moved away when she was 18. She kept my 2 girls (ages 4 and 9 when we moved) and we paid her 10.00 per hour. It is totally worth it to know that your kids are in good hands and you can enjoy your night out! Unfortunately, we have not found a new sitter yet :(
