My one year old son won't eat people food. We try everything and he won't eat. Now he is giving us a hard time eating baby food. He is not spitting any food at us, he just keeps his mouth closed.

My Peds told me his weight is fine for his age, however, he need to be eating people food now.

Can anyone help me? Or give me suggestions?

What can I do next?

My son is 14 months old and I had the same problem. Just be patient. My son still gets baby food fruits and veggies. try things that have more of a baby food feel, like yogurt ect. also, wheni give him peopel food, i cut it up extremely small and/or smash it up for him. he is getting better wtih it each day. i also found that he'll eat more things if i let him feed himself. it is a very messy thing to do, but if it gets him to eat then i go with it! Good luck, i found at this age, they sometimes just dont want to eat at all..and that is ok too.

My son is 14 months old now and decided for awhile he wouldn't eat anything I would give him. My pediatrician told me not to worry about it and just feed him things i knew he'd eat when he rejected food for several meals. For him, I realized when he wa sreally hungry, he would eat. Also I didn't realize how many snacks he would sometimes get a day between bites and crackers and things like that as well as how much milk he's getting, but it helped me to remember how much a serving for a baby is. I think an entire meal should be about the size of your fist if they're eating well. I realized it's so small because their stomachs are so small so a few bites may be enough for them to feel full. Good luck!

My girls did not like real food yet either at this age. I just kept up with baby food and whatever they did like. Carrots and sweet potatoes all day, lol. Just feed him what he will eat till he enjoys it again and then try to introduce other foods once he associates eating with being fun and yummy. It is a control game that all kids play and he will do it again later too.

I was a nanny for a family with a little boy who was a poor eater... his case was a little different because he was and still is under weight, but I found two things to be very helpful. One, try not to get stressed out, make meal times fun, when he knew I was frustrated it was more difficult to feed him. Two, stay consistent. When his mother and I were feeding him we tried different foods and always managed to get him to eat something... while his father would give up pretty quickly... which seemed to confuse him even more. Maybe just having him at the table in his high chair during meal times... so he can see everyone else eating will inspire him to try some too :) GOOD LUCK!!!!!

I agree with the post about trying not to get frustrated. I know it can make you crazy when you provide meals and baby won't even try one thing. Just keep trying different things. Just give him what he likes to eat, if its a certain type of baby food, stick with that. Also, don't force the issue, if he wont eat, don't make him. That makes the experience unpleasant for him and he'll be more likely to resist everything at meal times. Maybe get a fruit salad and try cutting it up real small, let him see you eating it first and then offer it to him. Sometimes my son thinks I'm eating something special so he wants it too. Does your baby like pasta? I can always count on pasta when nothing else will do. Also, don't get hung up on what he should be doing at his age, my son ate jar baby food up until he was 15 months or so, he's 17 months and I'd still offer it to him if nothing else worked. Good luck!

Try mixing cereal in his bottle. That'll probably get him used to it. What type of people food is he eating. I find that my children don't like all that vegatable stuff but they do love the mashed potatoes with gravy and the sweet potatoes. Speak to a nutritionist.

are you feeding him from the spoon? do you give him finger foods?
My Dr gave me great advice when my daughter was refusing foods from the spoon... she wanted to do everything herself (at 9 months old!). The Dr suggested I give her a spoon to hold too... and then she would eat from the spoon I was feeding her with because she was distracted. She also learned how to use the spoon shortly after that as well.. so it was a win win situation! :-D

I can sympathize!! Everyone gave you good advice, one thing they didn't mention is for your piece of mind...give him a liquid vitamin like poly-visol - you can get this at any drug store. Or instead of giving him cows milk, you can try the enriched toddler formulas that are on the market - you don't have to use them everyday - just on the days he eats poorly. *HUGS* K. :}
