You are right, most babies' heads are steady by the age of 5-6 months. Your sister's baby should have had several well-child checks (which are usually free) by the time she is 1. Your sister needs to schedule an appointment with a pediatrician immediately, and voice her concerns about her daughter's head issues. If she isn't getting any answers or solutions, she needs to take her to a new doctor.

Best of luck to you all!

I would say take her to her paediatrician immediately and voice your concerns about her head... they can hopefully give you more insight into what would be causing it. But they can't find a solution to a problem which they are not aware of. If the answer is not clear, the doctor will probably do some simple tests to find out the source of the delay. I hope that she is okay and that you find the answer soon.
best of luck!

If you mean the baby can't hold it's head steady - as in support it's own head so it doesn't flop around - you need to get the baby to a doctor to figure this out. It's NOT NORMAL.

Sorry--not a clue what you're talking about, but I'll go ahead and guess.

If a O. year old baby cannot hold her head up at the age of O., and her pediatrician is not concerned, I think she needs a new doctor--yesterday.

Good luck.

It is really hard to be completely sure what exactly you are asking, but if she is unable to hold her head up at age one, she definitely needs to be worked up. Does she have any other delays? Does she sit, roll, crawl, stand, babble/talk? It might be an indicator of a severe delay if she is not doing any or several of these? Or does she hold her head to a side (left/right) or tilted (towards her left/right shoulder)? These could be problems related to her vision or to very tight neck muscles on one side, which generally also causes a flattened head on that side...regardless, she needs to be seen by a pediatrician as soon as possible, and if the one she sees regularly (which I hope she does, since it is SO important to not miss any of the well baby appointments during the first 2 years of life, since that is what allows the detection and treatment of any abnormal growth and development problems, as well as getting all the needed immunizations) has not considered it a problem, then change pediatricians and make the new one listen to your concerns. Good luck.

I'm not clear what the problem or symptom is. If your sister is not happy with the pediatrician she can go to a different doctor for a second opinion.

I agree this child need to be seen for a 1 year check up anyway so this can be discussed during the check up.

My nephew had the same problem. When he was crawling at the baby sitter's who had tile floors, he would get tired and drop his head and come home with goose-eggs most days.

He was measured at the 95-99th percentile in head size - the doctors were really concerned about extra fluid on his brain.

If your neice hasn't be going to a pediatrician regularly, she needs to get in ASAP to have her head size checked out.

If her head size is normal, it could be that she can't see well and so has no need to use her neck muscles to look at things.

In any case, your neice needs to be evaluated by a pediatrician.

My neighbor's daughter held her head to one side. Perhaps this is the problem. It's called torticollis. Your sister should definitely talk to her pediatrician about this. My neighbor's daughter qualified for intervention and sees a therapist that works on this and her fine motor skills, which were also delayed. She is now almost 2. She still sees the therapist, but she holds her head fine and is very smart and happy.

S., your English is hard to understand here. We think you mean that the baby's head is not steady - that her neck isn't strong enough to hold her head up. Is that what you mean?

She needs to see a pediatrician - a baby doctor. Has your sister taken the baby to the doctor?

That's very important.

If the bsby is sitting in a car seat all day it will not develop its neck muscles and its head will not form right. You need to make sure that the baby is getting tummy time and learning to sit up straight on her own. By now she should be walking. You should talk to the peditrician to see if she needs physical therapy to correct this.
Good luck!
