Baby's First Tooth Arrived 6 Weeks Ago - No Sign of Any More Yet...

Hello all. My 7.5 month daughter got her first tooth (left front lower) about 6 weeks ago. It is still growing in, but no other teeth have appeared yet. Everyone says usually the bottom two come in together. Has anyone seen this sort of delay? She has fussy periods some days and nights now and I think sometimes it might be from teething but so far no other teeth. I sometimes give her infant tylenol if I can't settle her down in case it's teething pain but I truly have no clue. Any advise or similar experiences would be helpful.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I thank everyone for re-assuring me that she was fine. As a first time mother it is so easy to fall into the trap of believing everything you read about what and when a baby "should" be doing everything. It turns out the second bottom tooth is coming through now and perhaps that explains her fussiness this past week. The last two nights have been better. Thanks everyone!

Hi J. -

All I can say is that teeth have a mind of their own. My daughter got two teeth when she was 6 months old. Now she is 14 months old and still only has those two teeth. She has been teething like crazy for the past two months and still no new teeth. I asked my DDS about it he said that the babies 20 first teeth may take up to 3 years to come in and they may come in sporadically. Also, not every child's teeth come in in the same order - so don't be alarmed. I give my daughter tylenol when she is in pain - I also give her anbusol - teething biscuits and teethers that I have put in the fridge. I also let her knaw on wet face cloths that I have placed in the fridge. I hope this helps - I know how frustrating it can be.

You should stay away from orajel it can cause short term blood defects if you use it too much. Once a baby is over 6 months they can have baby motrin which works better for pain than tylenol. I dont know if you've seen those little mesh sacks that you can put food in for your baby but I use it for frozen fruit and let my son chew on it when he has a tooth coming in. Dont worry about his teeth not coming in back to back my first son had all of his teeth by the time he was one but my youngest is going to be two and he only has a few and they've come in one here another there.

hi J. - BOY i could go on forever about teething. my 11 month old daughter has FOUR coming in at once (up top) and has been crying alot at night and is super fussy during the day too... but enough about me.
reason i am writing is bc she too started with ONE lower tooth and the other didnt appear for weeks... even more strange she got a 3rd bottom tooth (lower left) before anything up top. there really arent any "patterns" you can go by, and i hate when they say there are bc every child is different. but not to worry... they WILL come and yes, she will most likly be more tempermental than usual!!! i give my daughter motrin before naptime when she seems in alot of pain and wipe baby orajel on her gums. and fyi, even though you can't see them, the teeth are pushing through the gums and from what i can gather and only imagine... it must be SUCH excruciating pain! hang in there!

I read somewhere that tooth-timing (does that make sense?) is one of the things with the most variability between babies - thus trying to say "x number of teeth should be in by x month" is almost impossible.

Hi J.,
I have 6 children and their teething patterns have all been different. We have experienced what you describe, but all is well, now, so I wouldn't worry about it if I were you. If the teeth are there, they'll come through in their own good time. The pediatrician can usually tell if they're right there below the gum surface. Honestly, most of my kids were really late teethers, but they did eventually get all the teeth they were supposed to. My advice -- try not to listen too much to the people who tell you when and how everything should happen, because every kid is so different, and it's so easy to get paranoid that something is wrong, when in reality, I'm sure you're doing just fine.
