Hi J..
I hosted a baby shower last Saturday from 2-4pm. I chose this time because it would require less food as it was just AFTER lunch. I hosted by myself so I didn't want a lot of cost and I needed something I could do with minimal help. There were about 20-25 people (40 were invited) who attended, and there was even a little food left. The shower turned out very nice. I made this punch and it was yummy!
Baby Blue Punch
1 2-liter bottle 7-Up ($2)
1 64-ounce white cranberry juice (or white grape)($3)
1 2-Liter Blue Hawaiian Punch (I used the packets and mixed it myself for about 59 cents not including sugar)
8 scoops Pineapple Sherbet (HEB Brand was ($3/Qt)
In a large punch bowl combine punch, 7-Up, and white cranberry juice. Add scoops of ice cream to the top. The sherbet will melt and turn the punch a baby blue color with frothy white clouds floating on the top.
For food, I went to Sam's Club and bought some red and green grapes ($12) and 2lbs of fresh strawberries($4) and put them on a pewter tray. I ordered the turkey/bacon wraps tray from HEB and had them assemble it on my own pewter tray(serves 25 for $30). I also had tea and soda.
We played 3 games:
1. How Big is Mom2b's Belly? I walked around with a spool of baby blue ribbon and some scissors letting each guests pull until they thought it was the right size to go around Mom2b's belly I cut the ribbon and they held onto it until they took a turn wrapping their ribbon around her and the closest one got a prize (a jeweled picture frame $3) (1/2 price at Hobby Lobby)
2. What's in the Diaper Bag? I had a bunch of baby items in a diaper bag. I took them out one by one and placed them on a table for everyone to look at for 30 seconds. I put them back in the bag and let everyone write down (for 1 minute) what they saw. The one who remembered the most items got a prize. (magnet note pads set $2)(Hobby Lobby)
3. My Water Broke! In an ice tray, I put a tiny plastic baby in each hole and filled the tray half full of water. When the "1/2" cubes were frozen I filled it the rest of the way and continued freezing (if you don't do it like this, the baby floats and will end up only partially encased in the cube). I gave each guest an ice cube in a clear plastic cup. The person who's cube melted the fastest without touching it or taking it out of the cup yells "My Water Broke!" and gets a prize.(a scented candle $3) (1/2 price at Hobby Lobby)
For a "Baby Chic" theme, I used a lot of baby blue tulle, baby blue feather boas, glass rhinestones, and silk ribbon. The cake was a double layer with baby blue frosting with fondant polka dots on the bottom layers and fondant zebra stripes on the top layers. I used a lot of baby blue tulle (about $1/yd at Wal-mart) and I used some clear glass votives that I painted with glue and rolled in baby blue fairy dust glitter. With white candles inside, it added a little twinkle to the food table. In the center of the table, over a cream colored floor length table cloth that I rented ($9), I used a box covered with a white fabric remnant and then I "puddled" some tulle on top of the box so I could elevate the cake making it the focal point. The cake was on a pedestal plate so I wrapped a baby blue feather boa around the base. I pinned feather boas all the way around the edge of my round table. I also used some 3" wide baby blue silk ribbon (Hobby Lobby) to accent here and there. Instead of a gift Table, I used my son’s old crib. I took the front off and put a simple white crib sheet (Wal-mart $4) on the mattress and made a "crib skirt" with baby blue tulle. I had the guests put their presents on the crib. It was a hit! I did buy balloons. 16 for ($10) I haven't totaled my expenses yet but I think I did pretty well for what I could afford.
I'm sorry this is so long but I just did this and it is still fresh.
I hope you can use some of it...
