Our son has been sleeping in our room in his basinet but it’s now time to transition him into his own room. So I was shopping for a baby monitor. I was under the assumption that any monitor would do the job just fine but was quickly corrected that some monitors pick up a lot of static. We use Internet phone and would not want to turn it off to hear our baby. So please give me some advise on which monitor would do the job just right with a budget of $60.

What can I do next?

We have a Fisher Price Monitor and absolutely love it. We don't have internet phone, but we're in a townhouse with wireless internet and wireless phones in our house, plus in neighbors houses too and we never have any problems with static or other interference. I can even hear my baby breathing over the monitor most of the time and it's set about 4 feet above his crib on a shelf. I don't remember what we paid, but it was definitely in your price range, because that's what we wanted to spend too. I *think* this was also one of the recommended monitors from the Baby Bargains books. We bought it at Buy Buy Baby in Rockville last summer.

We bought a Graco digital monitor, and it's been working well so far. Supposedly the ones that aren't digital can be picked up by neighbors' phones, etc. This one has a vibration feature so you'll know if there's noise in the baby's room even if you are somewhere that you can't hear well (in the laundry room, etc.) It has 2 bases and comes w/ rechargeable batteries.

Good luck! (Enjoy your own room back!)

try going without a moniter. It will hone your natural given instinctual skills. We never really used one-tried at first but got to much outside static & voice(from who knows where!)- it sorta freaked me out. go without!

I have a cheap old monitor that works great...even picks up on his breathing. Ive had it for 11yrs and its still kicking. We even have our internet and phone in the same room and have no issues w/ it.
You can always get one and if theres a problem take it back, no biggie. Then try another one till you find one you like.

We choseto get a Video monitor because at the time my Daughter had to sleep on the first floor of our home while my husband and I slept on the 2nd floor. I was so nervous about this so we spent the extra money on the video monitor and it was SO worth it. She is now two and although her room is right next to ours now, we are trying to get her to sleep in her "big girl" bed and we use the monitor to see if she gets out of bed. It's been GREAT and I highly recommend it.

We have never had any problems with static either.

Here is a link to the one that we got. Good Luck!

I used a FP monitor for 2 years before moving to the Sony monitor ( http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2815277 ). I only wish I had known about the sony monitor. Now I buy it for all my close friends/family who are expecting. It is water-proof and sound sensitive. It shuts off when the sound in the room is constant and below a certain level; therfore, when your little one is fast asleep, you don't have to listen to the static. I don't know how the internet phone will effect it but it you can get the 9 channel model or the 27 channel model. You might be able to make it work for you. If not, keep the receipt and return it.

I also have internet phone, and we use a Graco monitor. Nothing fancy, just a base unit with 2 receivers. I've never had any problem with static or interference and one of the receivers is plugged in right next to our computer.
You can probably find a good one (slightly used) on craigs list and pay half of what you'd pay in the store!
