Baby Girl Issues

I am at a loss since this is my first daughter (incidentally the first girl in my family since me). Today when changing her diaper I noticed some vaginal discharge; very minimal amount but still discharge. It was cloudy white and the consistency of mucus. Is this normal or something I should be worried about?

Hi there,

I believe it is absolutely normal. When I was about 16 my mother had my last baby sister, and I had to take her home and care for her temporarily. Being 16 I didnt have much experience with newborns so my aunts came to my rescue. When I changed my sisters 1st diaper I saw the same discharge with mucus you described. My aunts assured me that, that is normal. Then when I had my 1st and only daughter at age 25 I noticed my daughter had blood and mucus. My mother told me not to worry. At our 1st doctor appointment with her, I asked the pediatrician and she said that is normal and will definitely go away, and she went on to describe it as sort of a " mini-period" my daughter is having. It didnt last long at all. I hope this helps. It didnt seem to hurt my daughter, and I was extra careful during those diaper changes.

Seen that lots of times - changed lots of diapers. No problem with those gals, but do follow your intuition if it seems really weird to you, get it checked out!

Hi C.,

I think this is absolutely normal. My daughter, now 4, has vaginal discharge and occassionaly even gets yeast infections. I treat them externally with miconizole (yeast infection medicine). I would have the first one diagnosed by a Dr., but she is a girl with all the "girl" stuff that goes with it. Good Luck...Girls are great!

My daughter had a surplus of this when she was an infant. So much so that I asked the doctor about it even though I knew the discharge itself was normal, I was concerned about the amount. It is all hormones. It can be gently cleansed when bathing. I also breastfed so when my hormone level went up, so did hers. If it is just the discharge and no rash or signs of itching, I would not worry about it. If it changes color, causes a rash or redness or takes on an odor, that is not normal and I would get her to the doctor to confirm a yeast infection and start treatment.

If your daughter is still very young (a few weeks old) it could be the hormones from your system that got into hers. The hormones can cause vaginal discharge and enlarged genitalia. I would call my doctor anyway, just for your peace of mind.

From my own experience and from what I have read, baby girls have a "rush of hormones" and this happens. I don't think I would be concerned unless it had an odor or was constant. I think it's very normal.

Yes, the mucous is normal. Sometimes baby girls even have a "mini-period" a few days postpartum. Have no fear. As long as the discharge does not smell bad, all is well.

I just called my friend to double-check. She's a nurse and has had three girls. She said that some discharge in infant girls is common. If you are concerned, just call your pediatrician

Is she still a newborn? I have a boy, but I read that newborn girls sometimes have vaginal discharge due to their exposure to their mother's hormones. It can't hurt to call your doctor, though, if you are worried.
