I have heard that babies (mine is 10 months) should not get honey, but what about processed food that is honey flavored, like grahm crackers or honey flavored teething biscuits, does anyone know if these are okay?

What can I do next?

Hi Erika,

I remember being confused about the very same thing! So I asked our pediatrician, and she said that the honey-flavored stuff (you mentioned above) is just fine. Once honey is cooked, there is no longer a risk for botulism.

Never regular honey for sure. I gave my first daughter honey flavored Teddy Grahams when she was about 11 months old. I think as long as the honey is cooked, it's ok. The risk with raw honey is botulism because of the way it's prepared.

I took precaution on anything honey-wise until he turned 1 - for the main reason that if they used raw honey to prepare the food, the traces could be there. The bacteria might have been damaged thru processing but I wasn't taking a chance. It's up to you.

Yes they are i inquired before on them the amount that goes in to flavor such items is minimal what they are saying is not to take a busicut and smoother it in honey than eat it thats way too much or to eat straight honey from the jar with a spoon.

RAW honey is what should be avoided, but honey-flavoring is okay. The danger with raw honey is botulism.

Raw honey needs to be avoided at this stage. Anything that the honey has been cooked in is fine. Anything that has had the honey added after the cooking stage should be avoided.

I have no idea! My sister's doctor told her to avoid honey flavored stuff if it actually has honey in the ingredients list. My doctor said not to worry about it when I told her that. This was one of those things that I was totally confused about! You would think they wouldn't make honey flavored teething biscuits if they weren't safe, but I don't count on that. I think in the end I just erred to side of caution and didn't give them. Which was probably totally unnecessary, but I figured it was just a couple months and not worth worrying about.
