Baby Doesn't Seem to like the Left Side... ?!?

Baby girl, 3 months old, has been refusing and weirdly, chewing, but not nursing on the left side, but won't sit still & nurse. When I switch her to the right side, she happily nurses until she falls asleep. Um, I'm getting tired of having one boob bigger than the other... Why is she being picky & what can I do to fix it?

p.s. Not to be rude or offend anyone, but my husband is in Norway, & I have two little kids, please don't bother telling me to contact a lactation consultant. I've already thought of that. I can't make the trip right now, & this isn't a big enough problem for me that I want to submitt a claim to my insurance & spend $100 to figure it out. That's why I'm 'mamasourcing', I can do it from my living room & it's free. If I get desperate enough, I will eventually contact an LC. Thanks.

What can I do next?

Sometimes the milk production and flow rate is wildly different between sides. I have one side that lets down faster and one side that makes better milk or something. When I was nursing my twins I would keep them on the same side all the time and one baby was gaining weight faster, so I started alternating sides and they evened out. Weird. I would try the football hold on the off side and see if that works. Also check for ear problems, sometimes when they don't like laying on a certain side it's because that ear is giving them problems.

BTW: Husband in Norway! I admire you honey. If you get stir crazy and want some adult conversation, I live in Farmers Branch, PM me. GL with the lopsided boobs.

Contact a lactation consultant. Your OB/GYN or hospital should be able to recommend someone. Most babies prefer one side (my right side was always "better" for my little guy). Maybe a consultant can help you figure out why, and come up with a strategy to "even things out". Perhaps the milk comes slower on that side? Good luck!

My daughter did the same thing for months! I don't know why. She always prefered the right side and I hated it! I just kept offering it to her at the beggining of every feeding and eventually she took it. You might just have to pump that side. My left side was my mega-producer and I think it might've choked her up a little bit, while the right side came out a little slower. Hope this helps. Kudos on the breastfeeding! You're doing the best thing for your child. I did it for 11 1/2 months and love and respect the choice that I made for my child. Keep it up!

I'm not sure why she is favoring one breast over another. Maybe she is not getting the flow from that breast like she is the other? Make sure the area is clean and that the milk is flowing properly and just keep trying. If she doesn't latch on than you should pump out the milk of that breast. You can use a manual pump and freeze the breast milk (it stays quite a while). If you don't have a pump than get a very warm rag, hold it on your breast, and just hand express it. If you don't let that milk come out than you run the risk of an infection/and or your milk drying up.

I hope this helps....also, if you call the Dallas Presberyian Hospital they have an LC you can speak to over the phone, free of charge. She won't make you come to her and she always has great advice.

My sweet bear has always preferred the left one. When she's being picky and refuses the right side, I just turn her around like she's going to nurse on the left side and pull her around into the football position so she can reach the right one. Works everytime. Good luck!
