It's a good article.
Autism starts in the womb - if you have it - you were born with it - this makes it a birth defect.

Interesting article.

I don't believe that vaccinations cause Autism. I know there are those that do.

There are people that don't vaccinate because of allergic reactions to the shots. We have vaccinated, and found a pediatrician that did it in spurts instead of all at once. I just felt more comfortable that way because I wanted to know reactions.

I do believe that Autism is hereditary and that there are mutations that happen. However, I'd like to state that the two people I know with Autism are incredibly smart. One, whom I've known since birth, is now 20. Still in a "shell" but VERY smart. The other, known since he was 4, is musically inclined and ahead of his peers in subjects, he also has Aspbergers so he's got it a tad tough...not to mention that his dad is bi-polar.

Of course it's not the vaccines. I'm glad you posted it - I had read it earlier in the day actually, and I see a lot of people posting it on Facebook.

Sadly, there's another interesting study that indicates that people who are convinced of something (such as vaccines are problematic, cause autism, cause "mental disorders" as Rand Paul said….etc.) will dig in their heels even more when confronted with scientific evidence. Here's that link: http://www.motherjones.com/environment/2014/02/vaccine-de...

So we'll see if you get a lot of negative feedback here!

I'm not sure we can call autism a "birth defect". There is considerable evidence that many issues, from autism to ADHD to those "bad genes" people talk about (heart problems, cancer tendencies, etc.) ARE due to epigenetic changes. Massive amounts of research are being done (just go to pubmed.gov to look at the thousands of studies) on changes to the gene expression (whether certain genes are turned on or off improperly) is the culprit in so many conditions. Fortunately, as we find dietary ingredients (one discovered and proven so far) that can affect gene expression and turn those "switches" back the way they should be, we continue the trend of being able to repair those flaws and reverse the resulting diseases and conditions.

And to the poster who said autism has nothing to do with intelligence - right on!

Thank goodness another article that says "not vaccines". That horse has been dead for years and anti-vaxxers keep beating it.

Genetics for sure - all I have to do is look at my extended family. You can't swing an arm without touching someone who is on or near the spectrum.

I follow a lot of autistic bloggers - one did a meme of "spin the wheel for this week's cause of autism" because honestly, a new "possible cause" comes out every week. (his landed on ladybugs). The desire that autistic people, and heck - the families of autistic people, want are SUPPORTS and research to see what can help them NOW. Sure, let's research to see how it comes to be, but that doesn't help the autistic adults that need supports, or the autistic teens transitioning into the adult world, or the autistic kids, or the parents looking to help their children find their way in a non-autistic world.

And big clapping hands to the autism and intelligence not being related - not being able to communicate that you're intelligent is not the same as not being intelligent. I read several bloggers that cannot speak/have minimal speech, and they are fantastic writers and deep thinkers.

It makes sense to me.

Interesting Mother Jones link, Diane B! And based upon the Mother Jones article, it sounds like only time, or another pandemic -- which will happen eventually -- are going to change people's notions about vaccines and autism. Hopefully it won't be a pandemic. We have been relatively disease-free in this country for too long; most people have no experience with or recollection of the horrors of vaccine-preventable illnesses.

So based on the MJ article, maybe the conversation about vaccines and autism ought to die down for a while, until the fears about vaccines are forgotten and a new generation of vaccinating parents arises. And schools should stop giving personal belief exemptions.

African American boys who got the MMR vaccine earlier than the normal suggested time are three times more likely to develop autism. There is a whistle blower who worked at the CDC and is in the judicial system now because they covered it up. There are 2 other cases currently, of drs. Who are in court now uncovering fraud from pharmaceuticals, CDC and vaccines. How nice to live in la la land but we can't be so lax about this.

1. There are two overreaching types of Autism. Classic - born with it and Regressive - typically developing child spirals into autism.

it's also know that researches at the CDC lied in at least one study.

http://dailycaller.com/2015/02/03/obama-admin-grants-immu...

I actually don't believe that vaccines cause autism but that a toxin overload coupled with an impaired ability to rid the body of toxins can cause regressive autism. Doctors who know most about autism (and are actually trying to help these kids - as opposed to sitting on their arse which is the status quo) will tell you this. Vaccines are loaded with toxins but so are building materials and our food and may other things. Genes play a role in that the body's ability to detox (we all have this) - the impairment can be genetic and our worlds toxin load is increasing. GMO foods, BPA (thankfully now largely out of baby products), on and on.

So in my book, vaccines are not all good and not all bad. There is no easy solution to this epidemic

I spend my energy focusing on helping my kid though healing his body and helping him deal and navigate the world.

Well, there isn't much new information in the article. Its been known for a long time that vaccines have nothing to do with Autism. I am interested in new research as it comes out about the genetic links.
