Aspen Medical Clinic- Bandana Square

Kind of a question, but I mostly want to vent. I had just a hideous physical/pap smear appointment with an internal medicine doc at Aspen this morning. She had zero bedside manner, patronized me and point blank told me she couldn't help me with about 80 percent of my questions. When I made the appointment, I specifically told the scheduler I needed a pap (I said nothing about a physical) and wanted to discuss some fertility and hormonal issues with the doctor. The scheduler didn't tell me the doc was an internist, just told me her name. The doc also told me she didn't really deal with "women's issues" she was more focused on diabetes and kidney problems. Oookay, so why am I seeing you, when you know nothing about IUDs, nothing about lactating women and also just condescendingly told me fifty percent of your patients complain about their weight when I told you I had some unexplained rapid weight gain? I really, really disliked her, found her intimidating and would rather have truly pulled me fingernails out than had her glove up and go rooting around in my vaginal area. I ended up almost crying, told her if I had to make a separate appointment with an OB doc anyway that I would get my pap done at that time.

Why does Aspen suck so badly? Why do I continue to wait god awful long periods in their waiting rooms with my little boy, why do I continue to deal with their incompetent schedulers, rude billing department and negligent nurses who measure/weigh my child wrong, once gave him a shot he did not need and never call with test results like they say they will?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you for all of your comments. I saw Dr. Randall at Aspen while pregnant and I loved her. I've also grown used to, though maybe still don't love, my son's ped at the same clinic, Dr. Gorin. I think it was just really emotional for me, I had scheduled the appointment six weeks ago, wanted answers and maybe reassurance and instead had this absolute robot who made me feel stupid and insignificant. I think I will take your advice and write a letter (leaving out the stuff about rooting around in my vaginal area, ha).

I appreciate having a place to vent - it made me feel much better!

I would take what you've written here and edit it just a little bit and send it along to Aspen. Include the name of the provider you dealt with.

Aspen Medical Group -- Division Office
Attn: Customer Service Department
P.O. Box 43
Minneapolis, MN 55440-0043

And then if you're able, switch to a different clinic, and find a doctor you like and request her or him by name when you make an appointment. I love my clinic, but there are two providers there I don't care for and I won't take appointments with them.

I would contact the head of the clinic to let them know how dissatisifed you were with their clinic and the care you received. Go into details like you posted. As working in health care myself, customer satifaction is a priority. Maybe the scheduler needs some training. It could be a number of issues. If the head of the clinic doesn't get that feedback from patients, then they will not know where improvement is needed with their staff. Your feedback is important. Best wishes to you!

Oh my!! I go here, I'm so sorry. I had a wonderful experience with the OB/GYN when I was pregnant, she was very young but wonderful - but she left and wasn't there long, maybe this is why. I do find them to be very disorganized and haven't really found a doctor or nurse practitioner there who I really like since having had my baby. I don't take my son there, we go to Partners in Peds instead. I would love to know who you saw this morning as I've been to so many of them there. So sorry to hear about your experience!!

I love my peds doctor (Dr Adams) and her main nurse (Lynn) at Aspen IGH. Smaller clinic makes a big difference I think. I always hated going to Bandana Square before IGH opened. I would change clinics if I were you.

I'm soo sorry you have had some bad experiences there. I have been going there for 3 1/2 years and have always had good experiences. I use Dr. Randall and NP Barb Washburn for my OB/GYN needs and I take my boys to Dr. London with his nurse Stacy. I have never had to wait more than a few minutes in the waiting room (sometimes a wait after I see the nurse but nothing major). Scheduling has always been hit or miss but if I know when I need to go next while I am there they always do a great job in person.
As someone mentioned Dr. Adams at the Innver Grove Heights clinic is fantastic as well. We saw her when we delivered my second son a few months ago. She is great.
I hope you find a clinic and Doctors that fit your family

All I can tell you is that I agree whole-heartedly about the Aspen system. Used to go to Banana Square when I was maybe 19-24. Then switched to better quality care for several years until my empoyer made a drastic change to their benefits offerings and I found myself (now w/husband and two little ones) back at Aspen. Lasted <1 year because I just could not tolerate their lack of respect for my time, my concerns, etc. Much Much Much happer now with HealthPartners clinics though I go to St Paul Parkview OBGyn too...Highly recommend Dr. K. Mikkelson. She has bedside manner deluxe!

I no longer go to that clinic either. They billed us, then refunded us after we paid and then billed us again. My favorite doctor left and I never found another one I liked. Sorry you had to go through such an awful experience.

I agree with G's posting....call and talk to the manager. If you had to pay for a co-payment, ask for it back. They may record the calls and can go back and listen to your initial intake to see what went wrong. I go to Aspen in Maplewood and have had pretty good service....If you need to stay with Aspen as your primary, see if you can go to a different location.

I agree with talking with the manager then taking your business elsewhere. Talk with your money -- it's a business like anything else, so don't support them if you don't like them! I go to Metropolitan OB/GYN in downtown St. Paul and like them.
