Hi M., Have you tried adding baking soda to the wash? That usually takes out odors. Grandma Mary
Does anyone have any idea how to get rid of the smell of mothballs? I washed a blanket with several other blankets (it didn't smell then) and some of our clothes. I opened the washer to a load stinking of mothballs. I've tried rinsing, washing, and washing again, no avail this point. I am really not attached to the original blanket, but one blanket was made by my sister-in-law for my husband, and he's rather upset. Now, the whole washer smells of it. Help!

Try filling your washer with warm water and put in a cup of white vinegar. Leave the lid up and let the items soak for about an hour. Then, let it go thru the rest of the wash cycle. That may do the trick for you.
I don't have experience with mothballs, but I would try Borax. For a while I was having a problem getting the smell of baby poo out of clothes. Then I started using a cup of Borax in every load of laundry and now we never have a problem with bad smells of any kind. Borax is less then $3 for a box, so it's worth a try even if it doesn't work on mothballs.
Try adding some white vinegar or some backing soda to the wash water. I don't know about both at the same time (isn't that how they make those volcanoes in science class???), but in the past white vinegar has worked really well for me when cleaning various linens.
