My MIL is having a massive Halloween party this weekend. Everyone is required to wear a costume. My husband and I want our 3 year old to be Joe Dirt, because, um, its hilarious! I got his mullet wig and he WILL NOT wear it!! I bribed him with candy and he hates it and wont put it on. This sucks! How can I get him to wear it?
He is not being this for Halloween, he picked out his own Super Mario costume to go trick or treating, but I really want him to be Joe Dirt for the party.
Any ideas to get him to do this? My husband and I already put it on to show him how cool it is (hehe) and hes not having it!

Help!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Wow, its all in good fun. Im not going to force the kid kicking and screaming to wear it. Relax. Hannah I dont think you really know me to call me childish. Just saying.

Thanks Jeanie, that was actually helpful. Hes a pretty funny little guy so I thought he would get a kick out of it. I didnt look at it that way.

We will see how it goes, but I would never want my kid to feel that way. I find it rude that some people insinuate I am wanting to harm my child by this. Its a joke.

I hated wigs when I was a kid. They were scratchy, hot, and just felt odd. I would have hated it if my parents tried to force me to wear one. I think you need to let him be what he is willing to be--Super Mario.

Uh sorry but you cant force him to wear it. He is 3 and has a mind of his own. Let him be super mario for the party, he will be happier and you wont be dealing with a cranky kid all night.

If you laugh when he puts it on there is no chance. Three year olds are extremely sensitive to laughter. They do not like to feel like people are laughing at them. Joe Dirt is obviously for you and your husband so one of you guys can be Joe Dirt. Let your little boy be Super Mario for the party and he will be a happy camper. Your little boy will get his feelings hurt at this party if you persist. He is not old enough to understand humor. He is only capable of taking it one way.

because they are humans and they have their opinion. He doesn't want to wear it...would you let your mom force you to wear a wig that you did not want to wear. Bribe with candy to wear a wig...really? I don't typically force my children to do such un-necissary things. Kinda childish. Just let him be super mario

yikes!! My niece had a serious phobia of wigs when she was young. I would never force a kid to wear something like this. Isn't a Halloween party supposed to be fun for all concerned? You and you are hubbie are wanting your son to dress as Joe Dirt for your amusement - not your sons! Let him be Mario!!

This falls under "pick your battles." NOT WORTH IT. Let him dress the way he wants to.

Joe Dirt? REALLY?

Um, are you serious? You're trying to battle a three year old over something as un-important as a costume? Save yourself the headache and only fight over worthwhile things like eating and sleeping. To put it another way: your son found a costume he likes. And you're trying to spoil all his fun while at the same time making him wear something that's probably itchy and uncomfortable. All because it's hilarious to you. Your son is not a dress up doll. Please don't treat him like one.

Let it go - it's cool for you but not for him. Imagine someone wanting you to wear an outfit they loved, but you had your heart set on something YOU picked. Same thing. If you really want a picture of him in it, see if he'll do that; then let him be Mario at the party. He's not going to understand why everyone's laughing at him as Joe Dirt - even if the other adults get it. They will fuss over cute Mario boy. :)

Some kids, even older ones than your son, do not like wigs or masks. They feel claustrophobic in them at worst or find them itchy or hot at the least. And for some kids it's actually very scary to have anything on their heads or faces. A couple of boys in my daughter's K class, several years ago, would become instantly very upset if asked even to wear a paper Pilgrim hat for Thanksgiving, etc. They had mild autism, and the school specialist who worked with them said it's not unusual for kids with other issues like autism or physical development issues to have fears about masks and wigs. I am NOT saying your son has any issues other than just not liking this wig -- but I am saying that in the future you'll find other kids, with issues and without them, who just can't bear stuff on their heads. It's no big deal.

Good luck! I got a Cinderella wig last year for my 5 year old. Um...yah never happened. So she was a brown haired Cinderella. :)
