Are You Looking Forward to the Olympics?

I LOOOOVE the Olympics! I have my favorite sports, of course, but I'll watch ALL of it.

I've been glued to it, winter and summer, since watching Olga Korbut's bar routine when I was a very young gymnast. Maybe '72? It was a Big Deal in our family.

I love rolling my eyes when they launch into an athlete profile, can we get back to the competition already?! I love to hate the broadcasters, the coaches, the parents. I love to think about the differences in each countries philosophies about their athletes. I love the root for the US, and love to feel a little guilty when I secretly root for another country's competitor.

I love watching the opening ceremonies and seeing countries march out that I have never even HEARD of!. This time I will miss them because there's a Santana/Allman Bros concert that night, teehehe.

Near where I live, we hosted a winter Olympics in Lake Placid way way back. It was a HUGE deal. So exciting. In 2008, I took my daughter to the US Gymnastics Olympic trials in Philly. Most of her team went. It was SPECTACULAR to be there 5 feet from Shawn Johnson and Nastia Luikin, she got to MEET them, coolest thing for her. Not so much about gymnastics itself, but being in the presence of greatness made her feel like....psh, they're just regular people. If THEY can achieve greatness, so can I, you know?

I love discussing how politics and war and international conflict and commercialism effects the games.

So how do you feel. From any angle. Politically, athletically, financially. Coverage has changed SOO dramatically just over the past 20 years, with all the new technology.

Frankly, all the good with the bad, I am looking forward to ALL of us together in front of the TV, with the lively conversation that will follow with the kids, it's just INTERESTING, you know?

What do you think?

:)

What can I do next?

Not at all. Back in the day I liked gymnastics and ice skating but I don't even watch that anymore. To me, moments spent watching sports are ones that I will never get back :-)

No . . . way too commercialized for my taste. I liked it as a kid but it's changed (like most things in this country).

I love the olympics too.

I've tried watching the same sports I am so excited about when its not the olympics, but I'm bored to tears. When the Olympics show the same sports, I'm on the edge of my seat.

I will clear my Tivo to make sure I have recording space for all the competitions.

I remember staying glued to my tv when the 1980 olympics had all the hockey games. I watched USA play and win all the games up to and including the one where we beat Russia. I tried watching the Stanley cup playoffs and fell asleep.

Good luck to our USA team.

Watching sports is about as interesting to me as watching the grass grow.
I know others who just LOVE watching sports and that's cool.
It's just not for me.

Love, love, love the Olympics!! I lived in the Los Angeles in 1984 when they said traffic would be awful and it wasn't. I was 18 then and it was amazing then!!

I was in China for the last Summer Olympics (My mother lives in Shanghai and we were also in Bejing). I have been fortunate to visit other Olympic venues...Barcelona was pretty cool.

Getting excited just hearing/writing about it!! I hear there are many available tickets for the events in London.....very tempting!!!

I love the Olympics too! I just watched a special on the Science Channel about London's new Olympic Aquatic Center. Really cool architecture, state of the art everything. I'm sure we'll be seeing some new Olympic records there!

I don't care for the athlete profiles either. I'd just rather watch the competition. I don't care if there are multiple heats.

My girlfriend is going to be there. She didn't get opening ceremony tickets, but she's seeing several events. So excited for her and jealous!

LOVE THEM!

Can't wait for the Opening Ceremonies and the controversial "not made in America" outfit debut! That's definitely a "d'oh" moment for the committee. I'm loving how they are trying to rationalize it because Calvin Klein is an American icon, but made in China? Not a good plan.

I love all of the sports- Summer and Winter. My husband and I stayed up way past our bed times to watch "Curling" because we got sucked into it. Gymnastics, track and field, team sporst... so much fun! We bought the kids their Olympic T's and we're ready to watch!

My college roomie is the lead event planner for the US team, so we get lots of "goodies" after the events and lots of Olympian gossip!

I enjoy the Olympics, but I don't enjoy being saturated in them. I enjoy limited exposure and prefer the actual events with some background of the competitors but not the long, boring, self-indulgent ramblings of the announcers and the politics.

I would like to enter my own game - refereeing between my nanny and stepdaughter. Sheesh…a full time with those two butting heads over single thing. Sigh. For your question, yes, we will watch whatever we catch on the rare moments we turn on the TV. We like the gymnastics and swimming/diving. Knowing our luck/timing we’ll probably catch some random sporting event no has heard of and root on whatever athlete looks like the nicest person or the biggest underdog.

Usually I'm EXACTLY where you are. Since I was 8 and my teammates qualified at Nationals (gymnastics) for the US team, and then when I got too tall (switched to ice skating) I can't tell you how mad I was Michelle got bumped & Nancy took her spot. Ugh. I'd seen Nancy kick a little kid in the face with her blades On Purpose during a public session before comp that she was (as always) treating like it was her private session on clear ice. Pro skate blades are like knives. The girl needed stitches from jaw to eyebrow. HATE her. LOL... The rest of the country hated Tanya, the skating world was cheering her on.

I've had Olympic dreams in 4.5 sports. (Whrn I say I used to be an athlete, I really mean it, even though I'm all fat and gimpy lately). Gymnastics was the only one I was close in (trained w Bella for awhile), but that doesn't mean a girl doesn't dream!!! <grin> I still have dreams in 3, where the athletes are often "old" (ahem. Like 40), but am happily aware I'll probably never do it!!! It's not bitter, it's total joy.

Winter was in my backyard (in the worst winter on record, I felt sooooo bad for those athletes!), and London is in my brother's (and hes going!!!)

Homeschooling the past 4 almost 5 years, we've done Olympucs unit studies. LOVE the Olympics. Usually.

But I'm in divorce land, and totally self absorbed/stressed out/ not paying attention this year. They could have started (have they?) and I wouldn't know. I didn't watch nationals, have NO idea who is competing, and am totally out of the loop right now.

So cheer and shout and revel a bit for me, this year, please?

I'm looking forward to them being over, so I can stop seeing all the commercials! I might watch soccer and basketball, but only because other soccer and basketball won't be on. Not an Olympics fan. I find most of it boring. I am a HUGE sports fan, but most of the Olympics are not "sports" in my opinion.

I've never had a vested interest in the Olympics. I watched here and there but mostly just a little bit. I've always been more interested in gymnastics and swimming though.

This year I'm more excited for them because my 6 year old just started gymnastics this summer and loves it. I am actually looking forward to watching some of the gymnastic competitions with her just to see her reaction to them.

I generally love the Olympics however I am having mixed feelings with this one. I am actually living in London right now and our life is being completely overtaken right now. We have athletes from four countries living in our town which is about 45 minutes from Olympic village. Our fantastic but over crowded public transport system is even more stressed and the games haven't even begun. I am excited that the torch relay literally run by my house on Tuesday, and the cyclist go through our town next weekend. Both of those are pretty cool. We also have tickets to a woman's volleyball game, only ones we got in the lottery. So the impact on my daily life stinks but the once in a life time memories are amazing!
