Having tried both salt and chlorine pools quite extensively, I find that the regular chlorine pools dry my already dry skin so very much more than the salt water pools. I would imagine that for skin with eczema, they're both pretty uncomfortable, but the salt is probably a bit *less* so.

Not sure, but once we noticed that regular trips the pool started really flaring up my older DD's eczema, we started having her take a thorough rinse-off shower after swimming, patted skin dry, and applied vaseline to the areas behind her knees, folds of elbows, and inner thighs. It worked great to keep her rashes under control.

We replaced our filter last year and after tons of research found there is little difference. It just cost a lot more for the system but the salt is less expensive than chlorine. You still have to add all the other chemicals to keep the pool balanced.

The benefit is if you stink at keeping the chlorine levels correct it is easier to maintain the correct levels with salt water. Most pools are harsh because people over chlorinate, and the PH is out of whack,

I'm wondering if your child has a food allergy. I'd try A & D cream on the eczema to see if it makes it better or worse. NJ is near the ocean. I'd take him there in the summer if able. Lots of nutrients in the water. I guess some of the shoreline is cleaner than others.

Good luck!

A salt water pool needs much less chemicals to keep it clean. Not having as much cholorine and other chemicals in the water will make a differnce in how dry your skin will become.

Salt water pool is better, I think. I used to take my daughter (who has had eczema since she was an infant) for regular swimming lessons at the local YMCA. the thing about their pool was that there was always an overwhelming smell of chlorine, so it was obvious they used a lot for cleaning the pool. My daughter came back home from swimming class with red rashes and dry skin. Then another pool opened nearby and it had salt water, so I gave it a try, and my daughter doesn't get rashes from swimming anymore!
