Apple Festival/orchard in the Area?

One of the *few* things I miss about living in New England is all the apple festivals & orchards that were available in the fall. Do you know of any in the Dallas (or north of Dallas) area? Our son is old enough to enjoy an apple orchard or festival now, and I'd love to find out where to go this fall. I remember towns up north having festivals with apples and all things made of apples -- cobbler, cider, breads, etc. Thanks a bunch!

UPDATE: We went to a couple of pumpkin patches last fall, including the Arboretum, and plan to return this year again. I'm trying to see if anyone knows of any other hidden gems that aren't pumpkin patches. Thanks!

So What Happened?

Thanks, Mommas! We're going to check out Henrietta Creek Orchards this weekend. I emailed them and this is the last weekend for apples due to some problems right now. We are SO thankful to be back in Texas and wouldn't move back north for anything, but I have to admit I miss those apples. We'll check out some fall festivals instead! I guess I need to scout out a small town for the kind of festival I'm seeking. Thanks again!

The only place I know of is in Lincoln Arkansas. I have never been only heard it was fun. I do not know how it compares to New England. Here is the link:

It may make a nice week-end trip. Good Luck!

Ditto for the website pickyourown.org. Here is the link to the DFW area. http://www.pickyourown.org/TXdallas.htm

A few years back, my husband and some friends surprised the wives with a Saturday outing. The wives had no idea where we were going, as the hubbies planned everything. They took us to the Henrietta Creek Orchard and we spent the day picking a variety of types of apples! They also sold handmade jams and cider and other things. They also had a garden that you could pick things from, so I got some vine-riped tomatoes.... yummy! At the end, they weigh the apples and you can bring them home. The guys watched the kids while we ladies made apple pies and then the guys made dinner (ok, ordered pizza :P ) and we watched a movie while the pies baked. We still had plenty of apples for each family to bring home to make applesauce and other things. It was the best outing ever and we wives were so impressed with our men!! Here is the link to their orchard: http://www.henriettacreekorchard.com/

I'm not sure if they actually have any festivals, but their number is on their website and they can let you know. I'll have to look into it myself, as I'd love to go back!

There's a nice Peach Festival in Weatherford. It's called the "Parker County Peach Festival" and is 23 years old.

Medina has a fabulous apple festival. But I haven't been for a few years. Here's some info I found on the web:

http://www.hillcountryresortandeventcenter.com/attraction...

"Baxter Adams brought apple farming to Medina in 1980. His experiments with orchards of dwarf apple trees were so successful that other hill country residents started clearing cedar and planting apple trees. The first apples were ready for sale in 1984. The dwarf trees produced regular-sized apples sweeter than large-tree varieties and able to tantalize consumers with tree-fresh apples in mid-summer when only last year's cold storage apples were otherwise available. Between 1,000 and 2,500 dwarf trees could be planted in one acre and an industry was born. Apples revitalized Medina. The Texas Department of Agriculture declared Medina the "Apple Capital of Texas" in 1989. Some 300,000 trees in the Medina area produced 100 tons of fruit in 1990 as the population hit 515.

Meanwhile, with no tax revenue to support the unincorporated town, Medina residents pulled together to form the Texas Development Corporation and turned apples into cash for the town by hosting an annual fundraising event, the Medina Apple Festival.

Hi M.,
That sure does sound like something fun! I'm afraid you'll probably have to trade in your apples for a pumpkin patch (which there are lots of in October). We also have Cotton festivals, Grapefest (tho probably not as much for the kiddos) and things like the Hot Air Balloon festival coming up in Plano in the next week or so. September is a HUGE festival month here in the Dallas area. Taste Addison and Octoberfest are also coming up I think. Check guidelive.com. They usually have a list of all the happenings in the area.

Have fun!

I'm from MA and have been here 16 years. I haven't heard of any apple festivals around here. You might look into east texas which is more New England like (hills, trees) or look into the Hill Country. Pumpkin patches are very popular around here. I was just in New England for 3 weeks and miss it terribly. Apples would be nice but I don't think this area is a good apple growing area. Good luck.

It will definitely be hard to replace some of the fun events that New England has to offer. There are places and farms that offer special times for the kids, especially during Halloween and Christmas. It's mainly due to the weather being so hot here, and those are the most pleasant times.

There is a site you may want to check out that lists a few places you can go to pick fruits. www.pickyourown.org You can actually look it up by state and find out the farms that have special things going on. It won't list all of them, but it will give you a better idea on some of the fun things that Texas has to offer.

Take care.

I'm relatively new here, so I haven't heard about any apple festivals, but we did go to the Dallas Arboretum last fall, and they had great fall/pumpkin displays and a hay maze, etc. It's not apples, but it was fun! Good luck!

Hi, I moved here from eastern Connecticut 4 years ago and I have not heard of any apple festivals. I am not even sure if apples grow in this climate! Probably not.

There are pumpkin festivals and pick your own events. We went to a fun one in Celina a few years ago.

I miss that experience for my own children too!

You won't find apples, but there will be pumpkin and fall festivals all around. Google 'fall festivals' +Dallas and there will be several that turn up. Something to remember for the summer next year, but Texas has great PEACH festivals in Weatherford, Gainsville and other places. That'll be next July...great cobblers, ice creams, jellies, canned fruit, etc. Hope this helps!

Don't know of any apple festivals but Celina has a fun pumpkin festival in October. They have hay rides, a petting zoo, pick your own pumpkins and other fun things for the kids to do.
