My question is if anyone took Zofran during pregnancy for nausea and had any success with it? I took 4mg of Zofran every 8 hours for a while when I was preg with my daughter and it didn't help. We are thinking of having a 2nd child, and I spoke to my OB who said he could prescribe 8mg of Zofran every 8 hours and that might help -- might, might not. We'd love to have a 2nd child, but I was very sick with my daughter for the first 22 weeks -- vomiting multiple times a day, lost 10 pounds in a matter of weeks, got dehydrated, was hospitalized, stayed in bed for 8 weeks, etc., etc. Not sure if I can still take care of the one child we do have if we decide to try for a second. Any information you could share would be appreciated.
Thank you to all who replied and thank you for sharing your experiences with me. I'm still terribly afraid to have the same experience again, but at least it is helpful to know that some of you had success with Zofran. We're still not sure if we will try for a 2nd, but at least I know there are other options out there besides Zofran that may help. Thanks to everyone for taking time out of your busy lives to respond.

I took the generic version of it with my second child. I got sick for the first 17 weeks. It definitely helped me to stop vomiting and feeling nauseous. The down side is that it then gave me constipation and I had to take medicine for the constipation too.

I did Zofran, Reglan, AND Compazine suppositories! The suppositories (As GROSS as it may sound!!) are definitely most effective! Good Luck:)

I was in the same boat. I was so sick I was confined to the house for almost 8 months. If I even smelled certain food I was in the bathroom. (My poor DH couldn't drink coffee or eat meat my whole pregnancy - at least at home)
After Zofran and Phenergan being completely ineffective, my OB put me on Anzemet. It is usually for chemo patients but it is the only thing that worked for me. 1 - 100 mg a day. I still got sick sometimes but I was 75% better.
Good Luck!

I just had my first Zofran experience and it solved my nausea problem instantly. However a doctor gave me a pill to help me because I was on vacation and feeling really horrible so I'm sad to say I don't know what the dosage was but within 15 mins I was feeling better than I have my whole pregnancy.

I have never tried it but i wanted to say that every pregnancy is different. You may get a little sick or not at all with your second child. My sister was severely ill with her first child, she lost weight too, but with her two she was fine.

Hi A.
I've not heard of or taken Zofran but I just wanted to point out that although you suffered terribly with your first pregnancy the second one could be completely different as no 2 pregnancies are the same. I've had 3 kids & the first 2 I had no nausea/vomiting at all (and they were boy & girl) and the 3rd (another girl) I had nausea/vomiting from weeks 6-16 and I felt awful. So what I'm trying to say is don't let the first pregnacy put you off of another , & somehow even if you do suffer with vomiting again then you will manage to get through the day & look after your other child.
Good luck

I took 8 mg Zofran with my first pregnancy and it did help. I found the dissolvable tabs worked better than the pills. It didn't take away the nausea feeling but it did stop me from throwing up. I was able to force myself to eat even though I didn't feel like it but I knew I wouldn't throw up. I had a friend that the only way the Zofran worked was to get a tube put in her stomach where she could inject it directly through the tube.
I've been worried about getting pregnant a second time around. I have my step daughter who lives with us, she was 4 at the time, and it was hard with her. I had to rely a lot on friends and family to help. The only consolation I've gotten about a second pregnancy is the hope that all pregnancies are not alike. My mother was deathly sick with 2 out of the 4 kids she had. So my advice to you is keep your fingers crossed, line up a network of help, and try the Zofran again.

Hi A.,
I took Zofran during my second pregnancy, had phenagren as needed (didn't need it) during the 1st. 8mg did great for me, I could not doing anything without either the nausea. I can tell you this, each pregnancy is different. no nausea or morning sickness with my first( I even went on a 7 day cruise and everyone else was getting motion sickness, me no problems). 2nd was when i got sick. It is worth it to have the 2nd go in with a positive attitude that you aren't going to be sick and work from there. I hope this helps.
I am excited mom of 2 beautiful kids 4 and 7.

I do not know anything about Zofran but I wanted to let you know that every pregnancy is different. You may not have the horrible "Morning Sickness" like you did last time. If you decide to have a second child will your husband help out more with taking care of your daughter? Do you have other family in the area that can help out if you do wind up sick again? Good luck & remember God doesn't give you any more than you can handle & he will also be there to help you through if you do have another rough pregnancy.

Ugh! I went through the same thing during my pregnancy with my son. I was first given Phenergan pills, then the suppositories, neither of which worked. After quite a few hospital trips for rehydration I was given Zofran pills, which barely worked. So, I was finally given the Zofran meltaway tabs, which were a Godsend! They melted in my mouth so my stomach didn't have to do any of the work, which is exactly what I needed to stop the vomiting (apparently they are used for chemotherapy patients). I pray that your next pregnancy goes more smoothly! I'm afraid to try for another one based on my last experience!

My sister-in-law almost died due to a similar situation to yours from her third child. Zofran and a great doctor were the only things that saved them both. She had gained 10 pounds by the second month of her pregnancy. Then the sickness set in. She lost 30 pounds the third month and was hospitalized. They tried to convince her to have an abortion telling her there was no way she would survive. So she found a new doctor who worked with her and her body. They tried a few different medications but Zofran was the only thing that worked. She also had to rearrange her eating times and diet but it was well worth it. Keep in mind this was her third child and did not have any of these troubles with her first two. The doctors told her she may not have any issues if they decide on a fourth but he will have the Zofran ready if she does. I guess my advice would be to get a good doctor who works with you. If my sister-in-law hadn't found her doctor, my niece wouldn't be here. Good luck and God bless.

I took Zofran with more or less success, depending on the days and my menatl state, but I took it for 9 months, all the way up through labor- so I hear you. I took it every 4 hours in the beginning, because I was still working and couldn't stay in bed...
Later I took it twice a day. I got hospitalized because I was dehydrated and they gave me another drug, of which I don't remember and I didn't respond well to it at all! There is an otc version of Zofran which is called Odansetron adn I took that too, with the same result as Zofran. It eased the nausea and kept me from vomiting most of the time.
I only have one son and I am thinking about how a second pregnancy will turn out. No matter what anybody else says, I still have to make up my mind and really wanting to do it- no matter what. It is a 50/50 chance I think! Well, I hope that helps you some. And good luck!

The iv fluids that they had me on seemed like it helped but a hour or two after i got home from the hospital i was vomiting again. this is my first pregnancy and if my monringsickness doesnt get better. My husband and i wont be having a second one. As much as want a big family , its not worth all the vomiting and hospital visits.

Hi A.,
I was diagnosed with hyperemesis gravidarum 6 weeks into my pregnancy. I lost 30lbs in a matter of a month. I couldn’t keep anything down. I was hospitalized 3 times for dehydration & malnutrition. I was first told to take half a sleeping pill with a B12 supplement to help with the nausea/vomiting - didn't work. I was then given Phenogrin (sp?) - didn't work. And I tried that orally and by suppository. By that time I was in bad shape. My OB ordered for me to have a PICC line inserted into my arm and I received my prenatal vitamins and the Zofran that way. It was a God send! Although I received the dosage through an IV over the course of 8 hours I couldn’t have survived, literally, without it. I had the line in my arm for 2 months and then was given a Rx for the dissolvable pills when it was taken out. No matter what happens with this pregnancy know that your OB will do whatever they can to help you. And like the others who have responded - this pregnancy may be totally different than your first. I am certainly praying mine will be!
Good luck!

I suffered with morning sickness (all day long) during my first pregnancy. During my second, I was so miserable my doctor prescribed the Zofran and I thought "Why didn't she give this to me the first time?!" I wondered why every pregnant woman was not given this miracle drug instead of left to suffer in silence. I still felt nauseated, but it made life bearable. One time I failed to take it and by the end of the day I was wishing I were dead. I wouldn't expect a miracle cure, but it takes the edge off just enough to get on with your life. At least that's what it did for me. Thank goodness for Zofran!

Hi A.,
I took zofran 8mg for all three of my pregnancies and it worked wonderfully. There were still days that I felt the nausea but it really did help with the vomitting. I, like you was sick 24/7 with no relief in sight! I actually took it for the entire pregnancies! My last pregnancy was with twins and it even worked with that. I would say go ahead and do the 8mg. You may not even need it with your next pregnancy but atleast now you know there is zofran you can use.

I was also very sick during my pregnancy. At first I was taking phenergan(I think that's what it was called). I couldn't keep it down long enough for it to work. After I had lost 13 pounds my doctor hospitalized me for dehydration and they started me on zofran. It was such a lifesaver! They gave it to me through an IV at the hospital and I was able to keep some fluids down. Then they gave me these little tablets of zofran that dissolved under my tongue. If I remember correctly I had to take it every 4 hours at first, but after a bit was able to stretch it out to every 6 hours. I still had to watch what I ate, but that wasn't too big a deal for me since I was just so grateful to be able to eat anything at all by that point! LOL! Good luck to you!

I took 8mg of Zofran oral and it barely helped. I also took it via injection when in the hospital, the injections worked slightly better but that was in combination with the IV fluids and the near round the clock sedation. I hope that you do not experience the terrible morning sickness that you did in the first pregnancy. All i can do is wish you lots and lots of luck. I was hardley able to take care of myself or stay out of the hospital during my pregnancy and it weighs heavy on my mind how on earth will I be able to take care of a child if I dare to attempt pregnancy again...so I understand your concern. I'm hoping they come up with some "miracle cure" for morning sickness in the next year or two. GOOD LUCK!!!!

Hi A.,
I took 4mg 2x a day and I saw tremendous results after my first pill! I was confined to bed because I just couldn't make myself get up--I didn't have the energy to move. I was dehydrated, lost 20# in 5 weeks and couldn't believe THIS was pregnancy for me! After my first pill, taken at night, I awoke the next morning *feeling* like a normal person. My body wasn't ready for me to *act* like a normal person but it was definitely my miracle drug! Each pregnancy is different, even for the same woman (I've heard), so I encourage you to go ahead with having another baby. Your second pregnancy may be much better!
Good luck!

This may sound crazy to you but I have seen it work over and over again with students I have taught. You need to eat 80-100 grams of protein when you are pregnant according to Dr. Thomas Brewer. If you 6-8 small meals a day it is pretty easy to do. 4 glasses a milk and 2 eggs is 40 grams of protein. 3 oz of chicken is 25 grams. It adds up quickly. The trick is you have to eat even if you don't feel like it. Keeping your blood sugar up can help keep you from vomiting. If you don't feel well peppermint candy or peppermint tea can help so can sipping a little soda while eating. you don't have to eat a lot at one time but eating makes a big difference. Like many others have said here, I feel Zofran has been a godsend to me! I had all-day sickness for all 38 weeks and 5 days of my first pregnancy. I tried reglan and phenergan without success, and was told those were my only options. I am now 34 weeks pregnant with my second child and am seeing a different OB. I have been taking Zofran since I was 6 weeks pregnant, and continue to take it to this day. The only downfall is I had to get special approval from my insurance, and I only get 60 4mg pills per month...so 2 per day. In the beginning I'd need two at a time and would only take them if I was headed out someplace, in order to make them last longer. I can now take one around 8a and one around 2p (you can take them every 6 hours) and for the most part I feel pretty good. I sometimes feel nauseous in the evenings, but I just deal with it until I go to bed. Anyway, I love Zofran and attribute it to me getting my life back! My husband is deployed and there is no way I'd be able to care for my 22 month old daughter on my own without Zofran!

Hi A.,
I was prescribed Zofran during my second pregnancy and it caused major cluster migraines. I too was bed ridden for 4 months. It was aweful. However, Phenergan was prescribed and it was my "wonder drug." It allowed me to take care of my 2 year old again. I would take it at night before bed and it would help me sleep and then when I awoke in the morning, I didn't have any morning sickness (which mine lasted all day everyday, prior to Phenergan). I hope you are able to find something that works for you.
Be blessed,
D.

I have heard of Zofran, but do not have any experience with it. As a teacher of natural birthing classes and birth doula, I tend to look at more holistic treatments. I'd suggest acupuncture now as a way to help your body find balance. It has saved many of my clients from very intense morning sickness. You might want to look into a midwifery practice to find out how they can support you in this journey. Please feel free to email me if you'd like referals.

i took zofran during my pregnancy. it didnt help, I vomited several times a day EVERY day of my pregnancy. Including about 10 times during my 20 hour labor. I was told to eat several times a day, i snacked on fresh fruit, icee pops and granola bars. It didnt help all that much. the reason i write this is to let you know that you are not alone in that. the biggest problem is not the vomiting...its the dehydration. so vomit, drink Lots of water right afterwards even to include eating afterwards. you may not feel like it but while your pregnant its not about what you need right? I think those wonderful snuggly little babies we have are worth all the crud we have to go thru to make sure they come out perfect. lol good luck!!!!!
