Anyone Familiar w/ADHD & Bi-Polar Meds?

My nephew is spending a week with me. He just turned 7 and I haven't seen him in a year. Since that time, he's been put on ADHD (Metadate 30mg) & bi-polar (Abilify 5mg) meds. The difference in him is unreal. Before he was very hyper, told many "stories", didn't listen, & threw tantrums. Obviously, he had behavioral issues. The thing that really shocks me is that now he has to wear pull-ups at night. His mother told me the meds make him sleep deep, and that he won't wake up to use the restroom. He's also wet himself during the day & hasn't told me. I've read the side effects on these meds, and none say that the boy won't know when he has to urinate! Please tell me, "is this child being over-medicated"? I'm very, very concerned. I'm afraid his self-esteem is going to suffer, & that's just the beginning. Thanks for your help!

It does sound like your nephew is being overmedicated. How is he suppose to play, much less be attentive in school, when he just zones out?

For many years, my family worked with children who had ADHD. We usually put the children on a restricted diet. After a couple of days, you could see a huge difference and the medications were not needed.

If you search online, you can find alot of information about treating it through diet changes. The diet that always worked best for my family was the Feingold Diet.

Good luck and thank you for being concerned about your nephew.

I know someone who takes some similar meds , but if she has the right doseges the meds usually balance each other and she can be just fine. She is an adult though and can talk to the doctor on her own if she doesn't feel right. Would your Nephew be able to do well in school in the state he is in?
Good luck I hope you are able to speak to your sis/brother about your concerns.
