Anyone Else with Anxiety Issues?

I have recently been suffering from anxiety due to a trauma in my life and have never experienced this feeling before. My doctor prescribed Zoloft temporarily to help ease my anxiety and I am concerned about taking a drug daily. I worry about the side affects which may arise and also of becoming dependent upon the drug once the time frame prescribed is up. Can someone give me some insight on how Zoloft affected you and if you would recommend it?

What can I do next?

I would be concerned about it. Do research on it on the internet. I use info.com, and then press research above the type in line, then type in side effects of zoloft. I found a lot of natual ways to help me with many different problems. It takes longer, but worth it without all the side effects and or getting addicted to a drug. Good Luck.

Hi. I very much have those issues. I am on Celexa which is suppose to help ocd's, and anxiety. I also take Xanax as needed. That is what I think helps me most. However, I have been on it for a few years, it is a take as needed thing. I do get nervous about going off of it. I have heard it is bad. BUT it helps alot when needed. Candy

I took Zoloft for a short period of time to deal with anxiety - prbably 6 months max. I had no side effects and it really worked to take the "edge off" things. I stopped taking it easily when the situation that caused the stress subsided and had no symptoms. One warning though... I recenty applied for a life insurance policy and was denied becuase of my prescription drug history.. the Zoloft is the only thing I can think of that would have been a problem, as I've only also ever taken antibiotics.

Hi C.. I took Zoloft when I was in college for some anxiety issues. I can say that it did definitely helped me. I was no longer edgy, I could sleep again, and I was able to manage my feelings better. I only took it for about 6-7 months. I had no trouble getting off of it. I will say that I did gain some weight (10 lbs) and was just "tired". If your doctor thinks this drug would be helpful for you, it is worth a try.

Zoloft can be a little heavy from what I've heard - Xanax works nicely to decrease current anxiety & manage it day-to-day. It doesn't take 6-8 weeks to begin working, & you don't have to wean yourself off of it either. I take such a low dose that I don't know about the habit-forming part, but it's easy to decrease the dose by breaking the pills in half or even smaller & just taking a little as you need it. I used to have to take it to sleep, but now only take it occasionally. Good luck -

I have struggled with anxiety since childhood. You have nothing to worry about with Zoloft. This particular drug is not habit forming. Xanex and Valium both tend to be habit forming, but I have found that they work better than most of the other drugs on the market. I have been on Xanex off and on for the last 10 years. Right now (at least when I'm not pregnant) I take Ativan. Wow, has that been a lifesaver! It's another take as needed med like Xanex, and it has been a huge help to me. I take Prozac daily and it really has been my saving grace. My problems are life long, and I don't hold out much hope that I will ever function normally without them, but that doesn't mean it can't be done. If your anxiety is trauma based, a good therapist could go a long way in shortening the time you are on meds. In the mean time... take the meds!

I don't recommend taking prescription drugs for anxiety. It's more of a band-aid than relieving the underlying cause. I do energy work on people and also teach EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) to combat an anxiety attack. I recommend you read some articles on my site and get some alternative views to this. www.wheelsoflight.org

I have taken Zoloft before and I don't recommend it. Taking Zoloft did nothing to relieve the anxiety and only postponed the feelings for a later time. I also felt unfeeling, like I didn't care about anything.

I recommend EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique). You can download the manual for free from the site www.emofree.com

A friend of mine is an EFT practitioner and it has worked wonders on me. It is non-invasive and you can do the "tapping" anywhere, in the car, at home, out in public, etc. I was have morbid thoughts and within one treatment, I felt so much better, the thoughts and anxiety subsided. I have a few times when a little bit of anxiety comes up and I just use EFT and it subsides. I love it. If you download the manual and read it, you can apply the techniques and you will definitely feel better. You can even help your children with the technique, it is wonderful!

Everyone is different and they have different reactions to meds. You cant basis your decision on what has happened to other people. Even though it does help to hear what the med can do.I, like the others suggested is to do some research on it.Only you know your body and know what your willing to put yourself thur.My experience with Zoloft was a nightmare.I thought i had problems. when i took that med I changed my mind.It made me manic,my heart raced, blood pressuer up,I felt like my brain wasnt in my head, i felt like i was walking on pillows, then i acted like a child i called my dad,my mom i wanted someone with me 24/7 i paced the floor.I couldn't wait till that pill wore off and that is that i only took 1 pill.I take valuim now, on a needed basis and it has worked well for me.I can take it and then stop without any side affects.Your body does get use to it.I take 5mg at first it use to knock me out now it just takes the edge off.Anytime i take drugs i worry about the side affects too.Especially after what happened with Zoloft.I hope you get some releif soon weather with drugs or other methods.Do the research and talk it over with your husband.Anytime you take meds you need to tell someone so they can monitor your moods and if there is any changes in you that they notice that you might not and that way they will know what to do if you should have any reactions to it.My husband, mom and dad didnt know what to do with me when i was having all those symtoms from the zoloft.

It's one of the better tolerated SSRI medications, and isn't considered habit-forming like the anti-anxiety drugs (Xanax, Valium, etc...) are. It will take a full 4 to 6 weeks for you to really notice much of a change. Discuss any concerns you have with your health care provider (hopefully a mental health professional), make sure he/she knows your full medical situation, as that will help the prescriber to be sure the medication is right for you.

People who are anxious worry. Keep in mind some of your "worrying" about side effects may be a symptom of your underlying anxiety itself. While mostly used to treat depression, Zoloft can be used successfully in treating anxiety, IF the patient is also receiving therapy, such as cognitive behavioral therapy during the course of treatment. Medication alone isn't considered best practice in the treatment of anxiety. Zoloft isn't capable of curing your anxiety all by itself, no medication can. Without concurrent therapy to learn how to change that exhausting and irrational thinking, your symptoms are likely to return promptly when you discontinue the medication.

Hi, I can only tell you how Zoloft helps me and how it don't.I also started taking it after some trauma happened in my life. The problem of being too emotional about everyday things, like getting very upset with my kids when they were just doing kid stuff.Taking what my co-workers were saying to and about me to personnel to the point of crying about it.And same thing with my husband. It seemed like stress just took over and left me either angry or in tears all the time. So,started praying about it and this helped alot! But the constant mood swings would not stop. Then my doctor prescribed Zoloft. The first year it seemed to only help a little bit.The crying spells did to almost stop and it helped me to focus more st my job.But it didn't really start helping until I stopped taking it from the concern of being on it so long and I was doing better at those things I mentioned before.
What I mean is after being off it for about 3-4 months everything started getting to be a problem again. Now when I stopped I cut down gradually by breaking the dose in half for about a week because before I did it ths way I felt very dizzy and weird just stopping taking it at all.
Sorry, this is so long so I'll try to sum it up.For me Zoloft help me but, made me very tired all the time and although I didn't get upset like use too I also didn't laugh and cut up with people as much. It's like it puts you on a staight line mode.
Well,I hope this info. helps you some how.Take care!D.

It is your decision whether or not to take the drugs. But you need to know that it will take approximately 3 weeks of daily use before the medication even starts to have an effect on your body chemistry. If the doctor told you that you could take it temporarily, either he doesn't know how the drug works, or he has a completely different interpretation of "temporary".

I would not recommend Zoloft. When I had a trauma and suffered from severe anxiety problems I was given Xanax for an as needed basis due to the fact it was not every day. This did not affect my sex drive or any other aspects of myself which are common with Zoloft. I also went to a therapist to address the issues face on to relieve and tredge through my issues. It was over in a few months and my family was back to normal without a daily medication. If you are not experiencing this daily I would ask your physician for something that can used on an as needed basis.

All of these drugs cause tremendous side effects. My sister was on Prozac and she experienced many of them. The side effects coming off them can be horrendous. I suggest you get educated on the area - here is a link for you: http://www.cchr.org/#/home
These drugs are very dangerous and very few physicians know or realize their side effects before prescribing them.

Hi, this is so often a nutritional, and I have alot(30yrs) of experience with helping people and tons of success stories of handling this.
The 1st thing is to get your B vits in, really in- a "stress b vit from a health food store, or you could come see me, and I'd help w/ the exact one--
no sugar, really it stresses the adrenals, and can leave all of us feeling awful- if you have seen kids after Halloween you know what I am talking about.
Then lots of protein, and good complete carbs- that means fruits and veggies.
The side effects of this class of drugs can be- will look it up-
And why take a scary drug when you can handle this with nutrition?
If you like some help, call me-###-###-####. If you follow the above recommendations my experience is that80-85% of my patients had anxiety resolve w/ the above- and then w/ that resolved the solutions are easier to find.

I went on Zoloft in Oct of 07 and I am currently weaning off with no problems. I had major post pardum with anxiety and was hospitalized. They gave me Zoloft for depression and Seroquel for anxiety. They both were lifesavers. I can't say enough about the seroquel. I took that for 15 months and came off with no problems. That wiped out my anxiety completely. The only side effect is that my libido was extremely decreased. But hey, after you've been married with kids that's just part of it! I recommend meds- they truly saved my life.

I do believe in a 'multidisciplinary' approach to maximize benefits in treating anxiety or depression. Anti-depressants most certainly do have their place and are unfortunately discredited far too easily. When used correctly, they can be life changing. Ignorance is often the downfall of antidepressants as a class of drugs. Providing your doctor has correctly assessed your needs and chosen the appropriate drug therapy, it may be of significant benefit to you. There are specific guidelines on how to initiate therapeutic doses, how long to continue and how to terminate use of the product. That is why it is important that you do some background reading on the correct usage of Zoloft if you decide to take it. Zoloft should balance your neurotransmitter levels of serotonin, necessary for mood enhancement. This can take a few weeks to take effect. There also may be some side effects. And again, you need to be educated on these so that you can assess whether the potential benefits are worth it. Tranquillizers like Valium are in a totally different drug class. They may be used as an adjunct drug therapy, but need to be used with extreme caution due to the much higher risk of them becoming habit forming. Again, if needed and correctly used they have their place. It is however also very important to address the underlying issues with an effective therapist. This way one is not only treating the symptoms with drugs, but getting down to the cause and facilitating emotional healing. In addition to this, one can practice different alternative stress management techniques. As I said initially, there is not one single treatment modality that needs to be used exclusively, but a combination to maximize healing on all levels. It is an important decision for you to make, and I encourage you to gather all your information in order to make an informed decision. If need be call back your doctor, call the pharmaceutical manufacturer, call the local anti-anxiety support group, call whoever can provide you with informed answers. A variety of treatments have their place, and can work synergistically together. And certain medications do have their place when used correctly, that is the key. Well done is questioning whether it is right for you and starting a process of information seeking. Wishing you all the very best with your decision!
