I am just moving here and am a bit shell-shocked with the prices at Dominicks! I found a Walmart on Meachum but it didn't have much for groceries...I did some shopping at the food 4 less next door, but I can't find some things I'm used to getting at Walmart.

Thanks,
~C.

So What Happened?

Thank you all soooo much for your posts...I just got my internet hooked up so I'm sorry with the delay! I did find Meijer's and did my last huge shopping trip there. I'm going to definitely try out the other stores in the future!

Thanks Again,
~C.

Hi,

I don't know if this will help, but we started shopping at Meijer and the prices are much better. Also, it's a huge store and they have almost everything you need under one roof (kind of like a Walmart Super Center). It's on the corner of Golf & Algonquin in Rolling Meadows, so it shouldn't be that far away from you.

Hope it all works out! :)

Hi Camelle,
I know this was not in your request, but I saw that you were new to the area. I live in Wheaton (about 20 minutes south) and I am part of a parent group called PACES, Parent and Child Education and Support. It is a great way to meet other moms in the area. They have montly meetings, which speakers present on numerous topice (like parenting, preschool, sibbling issues, etc.). There are also playgroups, moms nights out, children's entertainment series, etc. If you want more information you can check out their website at www.pacesmoms.org.

Hope this helps!

I don't know where there are any Wal Marts as my husband and I refuse to shop there due to the way they treat their employees, the towns they are in and their anti-union tactics. So anyway, off my soap box. I use a website called www.thegrocerygame.com. Basically they tell you what coupons to use from the Sunday paper each week to get the best deals and promote stocking up on items when you can get them cheap. It has cut our grocery bills down immensely and we still eat very well. You can check on their website whether it works for any stores in your neighborhood. We use it for our local Jewel. You will want to start saving coupons for a few weeks before you sign up, if you sign up, since they go back up to 12 weeks.

Woodman's that is suggested in another post is good, but a long drive. I used to live in Schaumburg and I found the closest place with reasonable prices is Cub Foods in Hanover Park. It's not too bad of a drive. The prices around here are ridiculous. I moved from downstate and was shellshocked myself. There is also a Super Target on the corner of 72 and 53 in Hoffman Estates. I haven't been there to see their prices, but the Super Target out by me isn't too bad.

There is always Aldi too, but I have never liked the quality of their food and the selection is very limited.

You're right to be shocked at Dominick's prices. They are the most expensive grocier in the area. I rarely shop there for more than an item or two. There's a great place I found not terribly far from that Wal*Mart you described. It's called Caputo's (actually it's called something like Alberto's Caputo. From Meachum, head South until you hit the Elgin-O'Hare Expressway and head West. The Elgin-O'Hare will end at Route 20 (Lake street). Turn left & it will be on your right at the first light. Since you said you're in Schaumburg, I'll give you another direction. Take Barrington road South. Turn left at Lake Street (Route 20). It will be about 3-4 lights up on your right. They have the best produce. Cheap prices. They don't have everything, but between them & Wal-Mart you should be fine. They have quite a lot of ethnic items as well(Italian, Greek, Polish, Mexican, etc.). They have a really great deli (there's usually quite a line for the deli, so grab a ticket, shop & return when your number comes up). Good luck!

I live in Palatine, and drive to Antioch to go to the Walmart Super Center. It's about 30-40 minutes depending on traffic, but it's TOTALLY worth the drive. I spend at least $50-100 less each week than I would at Jewell or Dominicks (I priced it several times just to be sure!)

I don't know of any WalMart super centers in this area at all. I wish there was...my mom has one in KY and I love it!

For inexpensive groceries, I like Aldi. You'll have to look online to find one near you. If you are not familiar with Aldi, they sell everything under their own label, but a lot, if not all of it is name brand. I've shopped there for years and never had an issue with anything being "inferior" quality. In fact, I've often gotten compliments on stuff I've made using their food. Like the 25 cent cornbread mix...lots of compliments on that..."these is the best cormbread...just the right amount of sweetness...". I made brownies with their box mix and my husband took them to work...someone actually thought they were homemade and wanted the recipe!!! I have also gotten compliments on their coffee, which I think is Hills bros. or Foldgers under a different name.

The other store I really like is Butera. I know there is one on Lake Street in Roselle, I think, but you might go online to see if there are others closer. They have really great sale prices, especially meat and dairy, and a great produce department. I avoid Dominicks like the plague because they are the most expensive grocery stores around. Hope this helps!

The absolute BEST place to grocery shop is at Woodmans in Carpentersville. It's kind of a hike, but the proces you save are well worth it. It is as big as Costco or Sam's and filled with everything you can imagine and the prices are around 20 percent less than Dominick's.

I have yet to find a walmart supercenter, I don't think there are any in the immediate area. The only one that I've gone to was in Forest Park I believe and that's a good 45 minutes away. Food for less is about the cheapest around. I would suggest Meijers on Golf road but if you are looking for inexpensive things, they aren't really the store for that but they have a little bit of everything. I hope this helps some.
