Any Hope for Low Progesterone?

Hi ladies,
Has anyone experienced a drop in progesterone during the first trimester of pregnancy and successfully carried to full term? I am roughly 7 weeks pregnant (it has been difficult to date my ovulation because I had a chemical pregnancy right before I got pregnant this time around). Last Thursday the sonogram showed a heartbeat, which is good news! However, my progesterone level dropped from 34 3 1/2 weeks ago to 14 as of Thursday. My understanding is that it should be increasing steadily; not declining. My physician has me coming back this week to do another sonogram and test blood hormone levels. This weekend I decided to do whatever I can to give the baby the best chance that I can - I am being treated with acupunture and had my doctor prescribe progonol (progesterone pills). Now it's a waiting game. I'd welcome any feedback or advice.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks be to God! Today is almost a week after my last scary visit to the doctor, and the baby is growing on schedule. So my physician is not very concerned about progesterone levels. He explained that progesterone levels can and do fluctuate; that the Hcg is a more important measure to follow. Progesterone supplements are also most critical in the 4-5th week, so I will not continue with the prometrium. I will, however, continue to undergo acupuncture treatments and herb therapy (with an additional doctor who is a specialist in women's reproductive health). I am so relieved and thankful to all of you who have taken the time to share your thoughts. For those of you going through similar experiences, have faith - you indeed can get past the drop in progesterone. Good luck to all us newly pregnant ladies!

I had very low progesterone levels. I was fortunate enough that I had a very good doctor. He knew I had lost a couple of babies and tested hormone levels as soon as I found I was pregnant. My progesterone was low and he immediately prescribed progesterone shots. He tested every friday and adjusted my progesterone shots accordingly. I ended up need them through the entire pregnancy which is not protocol. Usually they quite testing after the first trimester. Had they done that my little girl wouldn't be here today. She is as healthy as they come and we are so happy to have her with us.

my progesterone suppositories and i carried my baby full term plue a few days! the nurses always told me not to be alarmed - sometimes the level of progesterone in your body can drop at different times of the day. when they first drew my blood, i went in the morning before work and the next time i went in the afternoon - i worried so much - but in the end everything was fine - i think my dropped to a 15 and my boy was healthy and happy upon delivery!

I had to do fertility treatments for both of my pregnancies, and as a precaution used progesterone vaginal suppositories for the first trimester. Both babies came out healthy and happy! Good luck to you!

i have been thru several miscarriages and three very complicated pregnancies. the value that needs to steadily increase is your HcG. progesterone can vary based on time of day, or several other factors. 14 is on the low side, but i wouldn't call it "danger zone" low. the vaginal progesterone suppositories are your most effective way of increasing your progesterone, but when using them, it's essentially useless to continue to test your blood levels of prog b/c they act locally. i'd ask for some suppositories, but based on the info you've given, there's NO reason to give up hope! stay positive, use the progesterone, and if your HcG levels are increasing - don't stress. good luck!

I've had several miscarriages so when I was pregnant w/ my son my OB tested my hormone levels and found my progesterine was extremely low. I took (natural) progesterine supporitories for the first 20 weeks of pregnancy. 40 weeks and a day later, he was born!!

Hi L.,

Is your acupuncturist also expert in herbal medicine? If not, seek out another acupuncturist who specializes in women's reproductive health AND knows their way around with customized herbal prescriptions. Acupuncture by itself may help, but for progesterone deficiency you will need the appropriate herbs as well...and a practitioner who is knowledgeable in them.
