Hi Moms! I am just full of questions and you all have been so great, so here I am to ask another! My son is two and my mother in law insists on teaching him to swim; my gut says NO! I dont trust her to do the job correctly, so I want to know if there are any programs that my son and I can take to teach him to swim? Also, while I am at it... Is there any such program like a preschool that I can take my son to once to twice a week that I can also participate in? Love you guys! Thanks for all the advice!

What can I do next?

Kay's Swim School is located in the North Valley off Fourth Street and they offer toddler classes. I haven't enrolled my daughter, yet, but they've been there since 1974 so I think it's safe to assume that it is a good school. http://www.kaysallswimschool.com/classes.html

Preschool: my 4 year old goes to Albuquerque Preschool Cooperative and we love it! They have a 2-3 year old program that has a limit of 10 children and has 2 teachers plus a parent aide. All parents must aide at the school one day month, which is great because you get to know and participate with the teachers, the other children, and the program. Parents must also select a committee to work on, such as fundraising or maintenance. The program schedule is AM or PM on Tue-Thurs. or Mon, Wed, Fri. The fees are very reasonable, too, because of parent participation at the school. They are in the North Valley off Candelaria. It may not feel convenient since you're in the Heights, but it may be worth considering. They're registering now. The phone number is ###-###-####.

Hi Sara,

The YMCA has classes for Mommy and child. Also, the local country clubs have instructors that give private lessons in the summer. My youngest was swimming by two, I mean really swimming, big arms, head in water, the real deal. She had private lessons...watching her big sister! That is how my 9 yo learned as well with a few lessons under her belt too. The biggest challenge for many toddlers is getting their head under water.

So join a pool and watch the little ones!

The JCC has a great swim program. I took both my daughter and son to the parent tot class and we are going to do more swim lessons this summer. I think the classes start in June. You can look them up at www.jccabq.org
Del Norte Sports and Wellness also offer parent tot swimming lessons year round in their indoor pool.
As far as a preschool that you can participate in also, i'm not sure about that. I did have my kids at Gymboree play and music for a few years. The parents are involved in the classes which I loved. I also met a lot of great people. I hope that helps.

We've done the city summer program for two summers and have had a great time. I was a little worried that the teenagers running things wouldn't do a good job, but we really had some great teachers working with my kids. They had fun and learned a lot. Just go to the city website and look for the pools.
